You want to bring it to slam level every few hours. If you are only losing a couple of ppm of FC every test then you are ok, as long as you bring it back to slam levels. For example, you test and add FC to reach 12ppm at 8:00 in the morning and test again at noon. The noon test says you have an FC of 10 ppm and you add enough FC to bump it back to 12 ppm. You don't want to skip adding FC at noon. Continuing the example if you did not bump up the FC at noon and at 4pm your FC test was 8ppm, that makes 4 hours you are below slam level. You are still killing algae but at a much slower rate.
If your pool is clear and you want to swim, then it is ok to swim at slam level or below, and when you are finished bump the FC back up to slam level.
You do want to make sure to take advantage of the overnight hours when the sun is not degrading the FC by bumping the FC to slam level at dusk.
