If you’ve got iron in your fill water, use Polyfill to remove it

My initial one had a pipe that was pushed maybe 3 inches into the bucked. Second time I had to do it, I replaced that with a standard through the wall fitting, so the pipe terminated at the bottom of the bucket instead of being pushed inside.

Just a follow up, its been about 10 days now since I've filtered out the iron from my pool and its still as blue and pretty as can be. Haven't had to top up the pool any from the well since its rained so much lately that every bit that's been splashed out has been replaced, and then some.

After you did the polyfil, how did you keep rust from being activated while chlorinating pool?

Hi, @elsiecorr corr - I have well water that is chock-full-of iron. I've used this method twice - once last year after my iron sequestration step failed - and once this year (just yesterday in fact!) when I lost about a third of the water in the pool and had to refill. (There's a story there, but no matter ;-)

The polyfill approach provides mechanical filtration. So, as long as you're removing iron(III) chloride (FeCl 3 ...basically rust - which is what I get when my well water mixes with chlorine), once it's out, it's out. The process works to completely clear out the iron in about 24 hours for me. After the process, shocking the pool will not cause the chemical reaction further, and I have a great pool experience for the rest of the summer.

If you need to refill your pool for any reason or add water, you may have to go through the process again (like I did this year). I started with Swim Clear iron remover (which does iron sequestration and the filter then takes out the sequestered iron) and that works fairly well with my water when I open the pool (not later). But... after the spill and the need to reintroduce the well water, I had no choice but to either start over or do the polyfill filtration. The polyfill approach is hands-down the best method for my water.

I kinda went the other way with my pool and used a clear 1 gallon fruit juice jug filled with poly fill. turned out great!
If anyone is interested I have a step by step on how to make the filter I also show how to hook everything up from start to finish
From green water to brown water to clear water.

Have you actually tried it on water right from the well?

I'm curious to how well this would work. We have 2.1 ppm of iron, and I thought the iron oxidized when it mixed with chlorine. though if I fix a glass of water, it will turn slightly dingy. When we filled our pool, it was only after raising to slam level that the iron drastically oxidized. At that point, our pool was pea soup green but became crystal clear using the 5 gallon bucket filter. Mother nature tops it off, plus some.

What comes out of the tap doesn't appear to have as much iron oxidized. Have you tested it to see if it gets the iron out? Or is it only after it mixes with chlorine and oxidizes?
I tried using socks, didn’t help at all. Tried using my homemade filter didn’t work. Seems the iron only shows up after oxidation
