Winder, GA
First pool ever. Inherited from previous owner, drained ripped liner. Have replaced liner and filled pool.
Been full of water 3 days but ended up having to replace pump and multi-valve.
finally full of water, mostly city water with some well.

Current test results (
test strips (red Bottle) and T-1001 (yes I know I need a FAS-DPD, in the future)
FC 0

pH 7.1
TA 50
CH ?
CYA 0

Intended add per poolmath

adding to 15 FC with 2 full 10% 128oz bleach
EDIT: adding to PH of 7.4 with 2 cups of baking soda
EDIT: Dont have Borax at the moment. Will have to pick some up at the store tomorrow
not fooling with TA until i get a good test kit
vinyl so who cares for tap water on CH
Have a 5lb container of CYA and intention was to dump whole thing yeilding CYA of 45 (I am in GA and pool is in full sun)
no salt or borate add

Problem is I have no clue in what order to add these chems?
Can I add one after the other?
Should I run pump on low or high speed?
Should I only shock to 10 PPM since CYA not dissolved yet?

I really want to start this prior to going to bed and I have work tomorrow. Any quick help would be appreciated.

FYI did Sand Filter Deep clean prior to putting new valve on.

15pm for FC is too high with no CYA in the water. Target only 2-3ppm until you get some CYA dissolving.
Leave the pH and TA as they are fine for now.
Do not just dump in the CYA. Put it in 2 socks, tie them together and figure out a way to dangle them in front of a pool return jet (NOT resting on the liner).

YOur questions:
- order is not critical, but you really just need to get the CYA dissolving and then add the bleach to 2-3ppm.
- Once the chemicals are in the water, it is fine to add the next after a few minutes
- Low or high does not matter
- Why are you "shocking" the pool? You said it was new water. Is there algae developing?

Put you CYA into a sock, and hang in front of a return (water entering the pool).
Get your bleach into your pool while it dissolves (the CYA).
If your water is still clear from the fill, bring chlorine up to 7ppm for now, and try to hold it there for a while.
double check your Ph level... tap water is around 7.4.

I guess we were all typing at the same time!
and we never sleep! lol

One other thing... ALWAYS add chems a BIT at a time (1/2 doses based on the estimated volume of the pool).
Just about everyone calculates the volume a bit high until they get the hang on doing the tests properly, and let the levels tell them the true volume.
It is always easier to add a bit more later... Once it is in the water, it's too late to be able to take out an over-dosing.

yup, in front of a return jet, and yup yup, a REAL sock, like goes on your foot! ... now you know what to do with those socks that come out of the dryer without their mates!
lol

I figure adding 1 bottle of 10% (128 oz) at full rated volume will give 7ppm and no more than 10 if I am off by 25-30% vol
With the full sun exposure and in the south (GA) I figured being at the higher end of the CYA was not a bad thing...

EDIT: Is putting the CYA socks in the skimmer fine for tonight, it is getting late and I have work tomorrow...
EDIT II: Pool school mentions the skimmer as an option.

To be truthful, I HAVE done that, but be sure that you won't be backwashing your filter for the next week, so it dissolves completely, and ends up in the pool. and keep your filter running.

I use a spare sock too from the sock pile - and I use a clothespin or two to clip it to the top rim of my pool, making sure it doesn't touch my liner, in front of the return.
Thanks for the question about order - I had asked somewhere too and I'm happy to hear the answer tonight!

Good luck Stargate - MAN I wish I was in GA right now. I'm in Ottawa, ON - it was a hot day but hot in our terms not yours. ;)

1 full 128oz added
2.5 lb cya added (I have big feet)

Nothing surprising here. The CYA is not likely all dissolved, so the sun burned off the chlorine. This is why you add chlorine every day ;)

The CYA is slightly acidic, so it may be driving the pH down a bit. Keep aerating.
