New house with 20 Year old pool.

Single pump for pool/spa. Extra pumps for waterfall, slillway, spa jets.

I cannot figure out what the purpose of the bypass return line is.

See picture. Return manifold has 5 vertical pipes.

Far right spa retrun

Next to it pump/heater return coming up from ground.

Next to it pool return.

Next to it is a bypass with check valve.

Next to it is pool cleaner. This is the weird bottom of pool pop up heads that rotate. No longer in use.

What i cannot figure ouy is the bypass with check valve. What is the purpose of that?

Thanks

Ken

I believe that is going to be your spa return bypass/makeup, which allows you to circulate a set amount of pool return to spa while in pool mode, and if utilized, you will get some spillway while in pool mode.

Thanks for response but i do not think that is possible as it runs from the main return line to the POOL RETURN and not the spa return. Spa return is far right.

S,

Something is not right. So tell us more..

Does your pool have wall returns (Eyeballs).

Does your spa overflow into the pool? If so, I assume this is being caused by your return valve being off-set to allow some water to always go to the spa when in the pool mode.

The 2-way valve being bypassed by the check valve seems to have no value. The 2-way valve does not really do anything as the water will always run through the check valve.

I suspect that the original design has been modified by someone. I suspect that the check valve was originally part of a "make up line" that would have been used to let water go to the spa when in the pool mode. It would have been a check valve in series with a 2-way valve. At some point, it was modified to be useless..

What happens when you adjust or shut off the "by-passed" 2-way valve?

Thanks,

Jim R.

The more i think about it my guess is that it is a bypass for the pop up cleaner return on the far left. The two way shut of f might be too much so a minumum bypass prevents a pressure build up if the valve is fully closed. There is a spa spillway pump so no need for spa bypass. Yes pool eyes.
