So gas prices are insanely expensive. It costs me $500/month to heat my 7'x8' spa in winter. If I only use the autocover the spa temp drops to the 60's every night, if I put a tarp over the autocover it holds 79-80. It makes a huge difference in the heating bill as well as is ready to go in 20-25 minutes instead of 50 minutes.
My issue is that it is tedious to talk on the spa wall before and after I'm done to remove/replace the blocks holding down the tarp. When I open the autocover in winter, I don't open it all the way, I just remove the blocks, flip the tarp up fully onto the cover and open it just wide enough to expose the spa (the pool is 55, it's spa only). The tarp stays fully on the cover since I don't open it all the way.
It gets windy so if I don't use the blocks the tarp blows off. I'm looking for ideas of a semi-permanent solution for winter. I want to secure the tarp to the autocover for winter some how but can't figure out the best way to do it. Either weighting the tarp permanently (but not too much because that will create too much friction when the cover goes over the spa and tear it) or finding a way to secure it to the autocover that can be fully removed after winter.
I'm open to other ideas like a really large weighted blanket (that won't break the bank) or some kind of spa cover that isn't too heavy but won't blow away. My main requirement is that it is easily storable the rest of the year. I'm also kinda cheap so I don't want to break the bank.
Anyone out there with the same problem, any good ideas?
