I used a pool company to close my pool this year. I live in Philadelphia and it’s been a pretty cold winter. They used an aquadoor for the skimmer face with a gizmo installed. Today I noticed solid ice in the skimmer body all the way up to the top of the gizmo.

Is this something I need to worry about? I’m a new pool owner (2nd winter with pool). Do you guys see your skimmers fill with solid ice? I heard there’s really no worry in the body since ice will expand up. Is that true?

I do plan on clearing out the water once thawed (could be a while)

Thanks all 😎

There are two parts to the skimmer. The entry passage and the skimmer pot.

The gizmo will protect the skimmer pot. We recommend that you put pool noodles cut up in to the length of the skimmer entry passage, into the skimmer entry passage.

I lower my water multiple times during the winter. Have already done it 3 times. Each time, I vacuum out the water in the skimmer. I also keep the water line 4" below the skimmer opening for more protection.

Do you have a solid or mesh cover ?

Aqua doors will leak, given enough seasons. I tried one on a 17 year old above ground we inherited after moving and the skimmer was so warped from UV it took 2 mins to fill the skimmer pot again.

Solid cover. The skimmer plate and aquadoor are only 2 years old (had liner replaced) . I’m leaning the pool level was never drained at closing (pool company) and rain gathered in skimmer. Just a little worried about the gizmo doing it’s job

Normal with a solid cover with no rain accumulation underneath. (y)

Some aqua doors take years to leak. Others weeks or minutes.
rain gathered in skimmer
Entirely possible depending on drainage in the general area.

Get some pool noodles chunks in there for added insurance. Mine were floating so I bent longer chunks into U-s to get the throat well.

Hey All,

I’m starting to get paranoid about my in ground vinyl liner pool. I’ve owed it for 3 years (came with the house) I had the liner replaced 2 summers ago.

The same company closed the pool this year. I have a solid cover that I pump the water off.

A few days ago I just happened to stick my hand under the cover to check the water level. The water level is about 2 1/2 inches away from the liner track. I have the metal bullnose coping (pretty good condition). The liner also has liner lock installed all the way around it for extra security.

The pool is frozen solid. I checked the skimmer. And yup same… frozen solid to the top of the gizmo. My pool also has an aquadoor covering the skimmer opening. Im guessing the company did not drain water at all and additional rain water got in the skimmer as well (hence the level being above gizmo).

My brain is now racing towards “skimmer is going to break” and “ice or water is going to get in the liner track and destroy my new liner!”

I saw on a previous thread in which you mentioned water will seep out the skimmer collar. However, since I’m using an aquadoor, I’m guessing that wouldn’t apply for mine? Could the skimmer get damaged? Also what would happen if the ice reaches the liner track?

Sorry for the long post. I have just been driving myself crazy worrying about his Dang pool lol.

Any expertise would be extremely appreciated!

Thanks,
-Mike
