Opened my pool today. Circulating water really helps melt that last little bit of ice. Hahahah

Test results not bad either.

TA. 110 (maybe a little muriatic after ph comes up)
CYA 10 (sock time)
FC. 3 (wow, surprised I have any)
Ph. 6.8 (Have my air pump bubbling as we speak)
CH 150 (do I even bother with this? Fibreglass pool. I know there are opinions that vary)

I love it! I'm jealous. I am getting itchy to open as well. It's funny.... toward the end of the season, I'm looking forward to the break from daily testing, cleaning, maintenance, etc... I do probably spend more time than many trying to keep it swim ready at all times, though it's a labor of love. When Spring comes, I begin to miss it :) I'd love to get a more powerful heater one day. This one gets me about an 8 degree gain over the course of the day, but when the pump turns off at night, I lose some of my gains. If the air temp is low, it's a losing battle.

I think part of the reason I have never considered a solar cover is 1) we have an asymmetrical pool design (I guess I figured it would have to be custom cut or something) and 2) we have three dogs that are more brave/mischievous/curious than smart. One of my dogs has fallen in accidentally two times (with no cover on) being nosy about something in/on the water and swimming didn't seem to be all that instinctive in her. Fortunately, I was right there both times and pulled her out. As little as a chance there may be that it would happen, it's just not worth the risk. I've only been a pool owner for about two years total, so I'm still figuring it all out :)

You buy the smallest retangle solar cover that is slightly bigger than your free form pool. Lay out over the pool and hold tight with some bricks. Use a fat sharpie to mark the parameter of pool and then cut with scissors.

My sister refuses to use a cover on her pool. “Too much work to take on and off”. yada yada. She must have deep pockets though. Cause I know she burns thru way more natural gas than me.

There have been nights I forgot to put cover on and I lost 7 degrees whereas I would normally only loose a couple with it on.

I understand the dog thing. That’s a tough call.

Pool is 75 today. Raining so no point in bringing it up to swim temp. Bubbled the pool for probably 8 hours. Got ph up to 7.2. Will get salt levels adjusted over the next couple of days (I need 2 bags) and fire the salt generator up.

And to add to what Chris said...
Once you have the cover cut to fit your pool, then cut the cover in 3 equal sections. It makes putting it on/off so much easier.

Dude....you are impressive in all that you've done! Your kids obviously take after you, huh?

Your comment on the calcium though- check your heater manual and see if it requires a certain level of calcium? Some heaters do actually. No clue if yours is one or the type, but that would be one reason you'd need to know.

Ok....back to your snow play!

Congrats!
But I must say pool temp of 75.... in March.... on CANADA, it would bad juju if you didn’t jump in, lol. Have fun.

Last year when I opened, the kids begged to get into the pool before I had even hooked the pump up. I told them they had to wait for the ladder. They were brave enough to make a second jump into the very cold water.... they were splashing around for 15 mins before they had enough. not for me though!

Ya, I decided to address the CH. why not. No harm in making it correct. Have the stuff already.
We are going in the pool tonite for the first time. Lol. I sunk my pal lights to the pool floor for the winter so they didn’t get frozen in a block. Gotta get down there and put them in their Niche. Vacuum the steps and we are good to go.
Only gonna heat the pool on weekends in April. Then back to our regular schedule in May. Last season we only missed 6 or 7 days between May and October. We love the pool!
