I think it's time to upgrade...

What is you priming max RPM ?

Lo,

I have never limited the priming speed.. mainly because I run them 24/7, so the only time they prime is after a power outage or if I shut the pump off for maintenance. Both pumps prime pretty quickly, so they do not run at max speed for more than 15 to 30 seconds..

If you are thinking you need a check valve due to the pumps elevation (higher than the pool), you should consider a 2 way valve instead. Since the water going into and exiting the pump is not filtered, there is a chance that you could get debris in the "door" of the check valve causing the valve to hang open eliminating the benefit of your check valve. A two way valve works well when you need to service the pump and not want to loose prime. If you have back flow concerns, install your check valve right after the filter instead.
