I have a niggling question about deep cleaning sand filters

Since the water flows down through the sand then into the laterals before hitting the center standpipe, the laterals themselves by design "should" prevent sand (and debris) from getting into the standpipe when in filter mode. This is one reason we emphasize users buy the correct type of pool sand (i.e. #20 silica pool sand) because some other sand mixtures are too fine and slip through. Other concerns for sand getting into the standpipe could fall into areas such as overfilling the vessel with too much sand, or perhaps a pump that is too strong for the filter. In general though, any small/trace amounts of sand that manage to slip through the laterals should simply get blown into the pool. This is why if/when you see repeated times of sand getting blown into the pool, a cracked/separated lateral or damaged hub is suspected. Hope that helps.
