Hi TFP community. Second season (Indiana) as a pool owner. Prior to opening last year, a friend recommended reading up here. And I did. Last year, with your help, my previously unkempt pool was beautiful all year (thanks!).
Fast forward to this year, opened the pool a few weeks ago, and, for the most part, had the chemistry pretty dialed in. There was a slight haze, and the previous owners left some Bioguard sparkle up in the shed. Without thinking (or reading all the directions), I added a cup directly to the pool, not directly in the skimmer. Since then the pool has been incredibly cloudy and chewing up chlorine.
27k gal, SWG, plaster pool, sand filter.
I drained ~1/4 of the pool and refilled. Prior to attempting SLAM:
pH 7.4
TA 80
CYA 10
FC 0
CH 300
Salt 2500

I added CYA to get it to 30-40, and 12.5% liquid chlorine to get it to 10, per pool math.

2h later
FC 0.5
CC 4.5

I’ve searched and read for hours but haven’t found anyone as dumb as me. Any advice helps, and lesson learned! I didn’t use any witchcraft last year and it was perfect. I promise to never do so again if you guys can save me!

Thanks in advance,
Bobby

The Welcome to TFP.

Bioguard sparkle up adds cellulose to your pool to act as a floc or clarifier. Chlorine will do nothing to it. You need to be patient and allow your filter to get the stuff out.

What model filter do you have?

Clean or backwash your filter often until your water clears.

Maintain your FC and water chemistry as necessary. If your FC and CYA was low your pool may need the SLAM Process anyway.

TFP believes you never add anything to your pool without knowing the chemicals being added and the results you expect.

Thank you for the response! The filter is a Pentair Sand Dollar SD-70. I can’t speak to the last time it’s been clean, but assuming it’s been over 8 years - I’ve been here a little over a year, and the previous owners (that did zero upkeep to house nor pool) were here 7.
And, again, lesson learned. Never again.

Thank you!

At unknown exact age with the previous owners clearly using magic potions, I'd deep clean the filter to get in there and make sure the sand was still sand like and not gummed up. I'd probably just replace the sand if it was cleanable because at best it would take longer than I wanted to spend cleaning it.

Will do! Thank you all!
