Squirrels nesting for fall no doubt. They love plastic for whatever reason. I easily have 20-30 around my yard constantly.
I've never seen a squirrel in one of these but sure have found my share of rats in them.
On Vancouver Island I had a mouse eat the electrical harness on a highlander. I am sure they will eat anything exposed.
Bounce dryer sheets solved the problem. Mice don't like them. For that matter I can't stand them either.

A friend of mine had mice build nests out of the dryer sheets in his camper a couple of years ago! YMMV
There are several versions of DAP and Great Stuff foam that is rodent "discouraging". It works pretty well. We have a bunch of boxes with fiber optic connections in them out at a test site, and they were tearing us up before we found the foam.
