How to diagnose where a leak is [air suction]?

but my patience has worn out.
I failed.

Just replaced the 2 "Screws" at the bottom of the pump. Re-teflon taped.
Gave it all a spin on Filter -- nothing. Tried covering the strainer with water from the hose. Nothing happened.
Ordered some Magic Lube II

Gonna try and put the old strainer lid back on after I clean it up and re-lube.
Then will try it all again.

I am willing to die on this hill -- filter is finally filtering!
This spot - I believe is what I need to replace once and for all.
I did everything above -- and it's working.

BUT - it's sucking air in every 30 seconds or so -- EXCEPT when I flood the connection below.
Which looks old and nasty to be honest.
So I will soon dismantle it -- head to Home Depot and get replacements.
Then reconnect it all.
Probably not today - but now that the filter is running - even at 80% -- I see a light at the end of the tunnel possibly.

That is a proprietary union. Need to get a pentair union.

Thanks -- just ordered it. In the meantime - gonna try and run with the filtration to the extent I can get the kids in the pool this weekend.
Interestingly - when I went to Amazon -- it seems I ordered this before... in 2022
I was a younger man then - and prone to mistakes. I wonder if I messed it up?

Watched a video about replacing the union -- saw my new parts were almost here -- had a slight Eureka moment -- took the union apart and realized some dope [it was me] did not use Teflon tape.
I laced her up -- lubed up the o-ring - closed it up -- and hit go.
First time it started up without help and I honestly cannot remember the last time there were so few bubbles in the strainer.

Now... if I can finally get the chemicals right... :p
