We finally got our pool through a SLAM and got it looking great. But for various reasons, we're done using it for the season though it's too early temp wise to close it.
I currently have a leaf cover on it b/c our oak tree is beginning to drop leaves and acorns like crazy. We were out of town all weekend and came home to a TON of stuff on the bottom of the pool and all around the decking. Took me a few weeks, but I've finally realized it's caterpillar poop. Jerks won't eat all the leaves off the tree (that I don't want but can't afford to cut down) but they make a mess all over the place.
Anyway, I'd like to not have that happen, so is it ok to put on the winter cover to prevent any more of this literal Crud going in the pool? I could still test water through the skimmer, loosen up a spot by the return jet to add chlorine, and the pump is set on a timer. I wouldn't be opposed to taking off the cover weekly or partially once a day if necessary to keep from anything bad happening (not sure what though, this is our first season).
Also, we'll be heading out of town for 8 days in October and based on our weather, I doubt the water will be below 60 by then. We have a dog/house sitter, and I'd feel ok having her add chlorine, but would never ask her to try to clean/vacuum up this mess daily. If need be I suppose I could just winterize it soon with Polyquat and pray for the best come spring.
