How to Bypass or Remove Old Pool Heater?

Our in-ground pool, Nautilus DE Filter, and Laars Heater were installed in July 1969. The Laars heater has been turned off and inoperable since at least 2001, but it was left in place. The DE filter is still sending water through the heater, and the returned water is causing rust spots on the bottom of the pool.

I recently let our pool man go because he was not maintaining and repairing the pool equipment as we had asked him to. So now this is my project and I am ready to roll up my sleeves - once I identify everything and figure out how to bypass and remove the pool heater. (We will not be replacing it.)

I understand how the water flows from the pool to the pool pump, and then over to the inlet port on the DE Filter.
Then things get a bit foggy....
After filtering is ALL of the filtered water then sent over to the inlet port on the heater?
And then the water exits the heater via the outlet port and goes directly back to the pool?

How do I go about cutting the heater out of the picture?

Attached are photos of the current setup, and what I think everything does.

I appreciate any and all help!

PS: The good news is my water is crystal clear, balanced, and feels great. And I managed to find and figure out how to use the ancient Pool Skimmer Diverter that was hiding in the pipe under the skimmer basket, broken pointer and all.

Hire a plumber that knows how to solder those pipes correctly. I would also consider maybe replacing as much of the metal pipes as possible with PVC. Much easier to work with down the line.
