How to block a skimmer?

I need to replace o-rings in a Jandy valve that is the first valve in my plumbing setup. My equipment sits below the level of the pool, so water will flow out if I don't block it.

My skimmers are Baker Hydros. These come with a 'plate' that you install on top of the skimmer basket/sock for vacuuming. I installed those and plugged them, but was still getting substantial water flow coming through. There's an outlet at the bottom of the skimmer, but it's probably 3 feet from the top and I have no chance of reaching it.

Any ideas on how to plug these up so I can change the orings? Or is it ok to change the rings while the water is flowing out?

I was thinking I could get a tapered rubber plug, mount it on a wooden rod and use that - but looking for easier ideas if anyone has them...

I think plugging with your wooden rod is as good a plan as any. Other options are draining down below the skimmer but I don't think that is necessary. Can you stuff a perfect sized plastic ball in the skimmer opening to reduce flow to a minimum?

Don't forget silicone lube on the orings!
