How often should I backwash

How often is it recommended to backwash the filter. And how much DE should be added after a backwash. I have a 48 gallon Haywood ole school filter

When the pressure increase ~10psi over the pressure it runs at when clean.

If I waited until my filter got to 10psi over the clean reading the water would have stopped moving long ago.

When to clean a filter​

Manufactures will often tell pool owners to clean their filter when the pressure rises by 8-10 PSI. This may have been ok when pumps were much larger and plumbing was much smaller resulting in much higher clean filter pressures but with the move towards making swimming pools more energy efficient, larger plumbing combined with smaller pumps has resulted in much lower clean filter operating pressures. Under these conditions, allowing the filter pressure to rise by 8-10 PSI can drastically reduce the efficiency of the pump. So to minimize energy efficiency losses, we recommend that you clean your filter before the pressure rises by 25%.

Maybe depends on the filter type. Mine sits at ~5psi on low speed or 15psi at high speed. If I backwashed at 25% over 5psi (6.25psi) I’d be backwashing way too often if I could even read the gauge difference between those two numbers.

I check my filter with the pump on high speed. It sits at about 11psi clean and I backwash and recoat between 14-15. But... 99% of the time I run on low speed at 4psi, and when it gets to 5, I switch to high and find that I'm at 14-15.
