no pool store will give me a straight answer - trying to get our pool clear with DE filter and backwashing a TON. how much DE to replace each time?

When you do a backwash on a DE filter you should use 80% of the amount specified for the filter. You only use the full amount when you do a full breakdown cleaning of the filter.
