I know this is a really old post, but is the spa not visible in this picture? We are planning to do a 17x38 pool with a 7 foot tanning shelf full width(which leaves 31 feet for the deeper section). PB says 2 lights which there is no way. I was thinking 4, but based on this picture I'm thinking we could easily do one on the shelf, 2 in the 31x17 section of the pool and one in the spa.

Sound right?

Depends on the model lights you intend to use and the lumens it puts out.

Pentair has a few models of LED lights. They vary in size and type of niche required. The chart above summarizes the light specifications.

Pentair guideline is to aim for 4 lumens per square foot of pool surface. For example, if the pool is 500 sq-ft then you need 500x4=2000 lumens. This would be 4 MicroBrites or 2 IntelliBrite rgb.

Inyo Pools also has a good blog on How Many Lights Do I Need For My Pool? with a table summarizing the coverage of the different Pentair lights.

Jandy has an excellent LED Lighting Design Guide.

Thank you for taking the time to reply. I really do appreciate it.
The Further Reading thread is the one that led me to post I ultimately responded to, but was opened as a new thread instead from the moderator.

I get the chart and based on my calculations of my pool we should have 5 Microbrite lights(38x17 rectangle with a 7x17 shelf) and then one more in the spa.
Based on the picture of the pool in the Pentair Pool Lights thread, the pool should have 3.6 ((31*14*4 )/ 500), but he only has two in the pool area.

I guess what I'm trying to figure out is will I regret only using 2 as well in the pool section for a similar size. Doesn't seem like it and these things don't seem to have a great track record so the less I have to replace in the long run the better.
