How do you buy your bleach?

Living in the south and in an area where apparently a lot of people manage their own pool chemistry, local Walmart and grocery stores (even large chains like Kroger and H-E-B) are often out of regular bleach, or have only small supply, or only have Clorox.

Few questions:
1. Which bleach brands do y’all purchase and has anybody found a place for on line purchase with inexpensive or free shipping? I’ve looked online but I can’t tell what percentage some of the brands are.
2. Is there any place to get 10% that is not at a pool supply store? We have looked into the SWG and will eventually change, but my pool is 33,000 gallons, and I don’t have $2k to sink into pool hardwAre right now.
3. Is low-splash bleach ok?

I stopped going to HEB earlier this year when they did the same thing Wamart did with their bleach - lowered it to 6% but are charging the same price.:mad: So I've been getting my latest batches at Home Depot. It's supposed to be 10%, but take into account the Julian Date (age) of the bottles when packed and potential heat they are exposed to since most HD stores keep their chlorine out back. So it may equate to slightly less than 10% by the time we get it, but it's cheaper than others for me right now.

Will they let you buy a lot at once? I get funny looks, and they keep asking me what I’m doing with it all when I go to Walmart. I think they think I’m making crack. I’ve had to slam twice (cause I thought I was using higher percentage but just now see this Walmart is 6%... I do call each week and am away from home, and I just told my husband to put in a half gallon a day, but I thought was the 8+ %, and whoops, I came home to slight bit of algae...). Anyway, with all the SLAM, I’ve needed lots. I think we’re going to end up using 1.5 gallons per day (if I’m using 6%), just for maintenance. I’m not having good luck with finding places I can buy even 14 at a time.

That is why many folks eventually get a SWG.

1) I buy HASA 12.5% bleach in returnable jugs, 4 to a case. If you ever see pool service trucks with orange and yellow milk crates in the bed, that's their stuff. I don;t know if they have a plant in Texas, but that's what I use. Shoot 'em an email. Their dealer locator page is broken, but they will respond to the contact form.
2) Check a local janitorial supply. Looks like you use about a gallon a day with your giant pool, so I'll bet a bulk purchase would be handy. A phone call doesn't cost you anything. Maybe they can get in in a drum? Or deliver it right to the house when you buy twenty gallons or whatever at a time? Ask 'em.
3) No. Not ever. Splashless bleach foams up. And it takes extra bleach to oxidize whatever that splashless ingredient is to make it stop.

THANK YOU. I will look into all these suggestions.

Mrswalkley- check out Napco in spring, tx off spring cypress.

I buy 5 gallons of 12.5% for $1.68 a gallon.

You can buy a container from them but it has no spigot. I purchased a water storage container from wal mart and napco placed a safety sticker on it for me.

I buy a 55gal drum of it every year from my local chemical supply company.
They even deliver it to the back of my pickup truck while I am at work.
All it takes me is a phone call. :)

Oh this is awesome! Great! Thank you! Can you also tel me how much of the 12.5% you’re needing to maintain your pool? What size do you have and what do you keep your Cl level at?
I’m trying to get a grip of what we’re needing to add daily. It’s gotten screwy for me to figure with all the rain we’ve had in Montgomery county.

I use pool math, and my CYA level is about 50 now, so generally I’m aiming for about level of 9. Problem I have is I don’t want to use my powder in the test kit every single day, but there’s no quick test kit that I can find that goes over 3. So I’m using my “big” test kit daily for now. I’m just wondering if anybody near me, with pool in direct sun, has any general starting place what they’re adding per day just to maintain their level?

I used 500ppm for my pool last year with solar cover on half the time. That would be 125 gallons of 12.5% for your sized pool. Plus you may use more than I did due to your climate and my use of a solar cover. So you need to use a SWCG or buy in bulk. That's a lot of liquid chlorine. A pressure washer supply may have strong bleach in bulk in your area. It's often cheaper that way.

My pool is 14,500 gallons with cya of 40. I keep mine at 5ppm. I add minimum of 30 ounces a day. I test ever 3rd day and adjust accordingly. Based on pool math 30 ounces of 12.5% raises me 2ppm. I typically lose 2-3ppm a day.

I wouldn't rule out pool supply store as a good source of liquid chlorine. I know they are getting bad rap for everything else but in my area pool supply store have the best price.
They are selling 4 gallon cases of 12.5% chlorine for $14 a case. That's even better than 10% chlorine at Wal-Mart.

I get my chlorine in 10% gallon jugs from Wal-Mart. $3.64 a jug. I suppose I could find out if the local pool store carries liquid chlorine and buy from there, but it's about 20 miles away and I'm just too lazy. Ditto for going to Home Depot -- too far away. Besides, Wal-Mart stores it's LC indoors. HD doesnt.

Count your CYA as 50. Always Round up to whole 10s.

Your CL level was double your target, so it would burn off very quickly. Right?
Yeah, ok, I get that. You’re saying if it wasn’t properly stabilized/ connected to something to hold it, you’d expect it to burn off down to A level where it’s held. (I don’t know why I didn’t understand that intuitively). I’ll stop driving the level up way over the rec range for the stabilizer level. And I’ll repeat the CYA level in the sun outside. Cl was that high just coming off a SLAM, and I was trying to figure out how much I need per day. But I can see that if my CYA is correct, the Cl level should ideally be around 6-8, and then see what the loss is. Today, Cl is starting at 17.5, so I’ll just let it drift and just watch what the loss is once it gets down to about 8.
