How do I get the collar off a Polaris 360/ 380 back up valve

Micro fine particles get into the treads and jam the nut on. Usually I cut them off with a hacksaw. But quit messing with them altogether a good while back. I replace the backups with the Pentair equivalent, better design. Plus the Pentair has a swivel attached to one end. They cost a little more but 90% less headaches.

:bump:Bump!:bump: So funny to see this thread resurrected every few years. Hopefully the next guy reads this one from the end.

This works for me every time... Put the valve in the freezer for 15 to 20 minutes to get it real cold. That will cause the whole unit to contract. Usually the heat from your hand will cause the ring to expand enough to come right off.. otherwise run hot tap water on the ring while the rest is still cold. The trick is to get the housing to contract (cold) and the collar to expand (heat). I never had any luck with any of the brute force methods without breaking something.. but by applying a little physics it comes off with hands only.

Lube the gears inside with spray silicon.. and that is all I've ever had to do.

I figured out how to get the collar off. I heated it with an wire shrink heater gun. I think a blow dryer would work too. I also hit the top of it a few times with a rubber mallet after it got hot. After those two steps it was easy to unscrew by hand!
