How can I prevent this?

This is happening to my Polaris 280 nonstop. Several times a day. Very frustrating. It's bad enough when just the hose twists around itself, but when it backs over the water inlet valve, it loops into a true knot that requires the pumps be turned off to unravel. Of course, 10 minutes later, same thing.
occasionally lay it out in the sun, straight. Let the warm sun soften the kinks and curves that may have settled in. See if that helps.

Looks like the bag has a lot of debris in it. That can cause the cleaner to be a bit top heavy and make it lean as it climbs and ties itself in knots. My neighbor has same problem and emptying the bag more often helped.
I've had luck with moving the backup valve further away from the Polaris, although I can't see one on the feed hose here.
