How can I get that chlorine smell back?

Honestly this is what hurts most about not hitting the pool store every week. People think it would be hard to work at a pizza joint because of the constant smell... for me, a pool store would be worse. I still buy salt there, if nothing else. Just don't need much of it unfortunately. :(

They give me the creeps. I feel like they can tell I'm a TFP'er as soon as I walk in. I'm worse than a shoplifter: "he won't buy or steal anything!"

I figured I'd update this thread since I was at least partly serious about the question at hand! Maybe there are other weirdos out there like me. Richard's suggestion to work up a good sweat and then jump in was actually pretty good. I wound up mowing, weeding, and fixing stuff around the yard for about 5 hours in moderate heat. Jumped in the pool, and I had a nice light CC smell in a halo around me for the first 30 minutes or so. Nowhere near like a hotel pool, but it was enough to give me that nice feeling from the smell. Didn't even drop FC enough to worry about! Between that and doing an occasional load of whites with bleach, I might be ok.

I admit, my hardest part of TFP is going to be thinking of that chlorine smell as a bad thing! :p

Odd thread! But I have to say I've often wondered if I am just the sumperman of senses because I often smell the chlorine when I get out of my pool, and my eyes burn/turn red even with proper levels. And it seems like it is just me that smells it or has problems with any sensitivities. However, I am often jumping in the pool to cool off after I have been in the yard sweating like a pig doing whatever chore the day has me doing. I am realizing the sweat probably has a lot to do with that. I've been protecting my eyes with systane eye drops and that seems to help. I can live with the chlorine smell though, as it is better than the sweat/bo smell I'd otherwise be sporting.

What's your ph? I alway swim underwater with my eyes open. I've notice when my ph is 7.7-7.8 my eyes start burning. My TA is down to 50 now, so I don't think I'll have to worry about 7.8 ph anymore. It's rock solid at 7.2, and I just added borates. I don't think it'll ever move now.

We used to have no problem swimming in hotel pools or at the Y. Always assumed that if the chlorine smell was strong it meant they were dosing it well to keep everyone safe. Now that we know what it means we have a much harder time getting into public pools. And when we do it's... don't get it in your mouth, Don't swallow any, and immediate shower after.

I've been through multiple threads round and round with this question and many others like it. I really think it's just my eyes, as no one on this forum has been able to find any problems. Perhaps an overuse of Clear Eyes over the last decade or so. I don't know. I do have really good sense of smell and taste as well.

Anyway, my ph is rock solid at 7.2/7.4 (hard to tell the exact shade of orange). I also have borates, but 40ppm, and my ph only moves with temp. My TA is 60, salt 2000ppm. I've tried keeping my FC near minimum for my CYA level, and at target...no difference. The problem is either me, or something very unique in my pool (but again, I seem to be the only one complaining)

spinHD, my dad and my sister smoked and I used to hate the smell of it. Then I went to a casino a couple of times and had a blast! Now I smell cigarette smoke and think, "where are the video poker machines"!

drharris, eventually you will get used to the light, fresh bleach scent. Do you feel more alert after experiencing sharp odors? Its a little sensory processing thing, like when they used smelling salts to wake up people who had fainted. You probably get a little adrenaline rush from it!

I don't know if "alert" is quite the right word, but the chlorine smell just makes me feel relaxed, clean, and fresh. I guess that's kind of like alert, but not in the same way a coffee smell works on me. But as above, I like a lot of weird scents like alcohol, acetone, marker, gasoline, etc. so I'm probably just weird! I even kind of like skunk; even though I can tell it's not a good smell, it's more of an intrigue thing.
