High cya

Hello, we’re having trouble getting our pool balanced. I’ve been testing with a proper test kit,
Free Chlorine 15
Ph 7.8
Total alkalinity 160
Stabilizer 55
Calcium hardness 300
I can’t figure out why my alkalinity just keeps going higher! I’ve been trying to shock it with liquid chlorine for about a week now because our pump broke while we were on vacation and it was off for a couple days. This morning I added a half a gallon of Muratic acid thinking that might help with the alkalinity but I’m struggling to understand the way this all works so any suggestions would be very appreciated!

pH rises due to high TA. Muriatic Acid reduces pH, which in turn reduces TA. Once TA reaches equilibrium (typically around 50-60), pH will stop rising and stabilize in the 7's.

Your title is "High CYA" but you list 55 - CYA scale is non-linear, so always round up. Your CYA for FC needs is 60 per FC/CYA Levels.

Your TA is likely high because your fill water is higher than your pool water, or someone has been adding baking soda. You can easily test TA of your fill water using the same test.

In PoolMath, you can use the "effects of adding" function to see how much each acid addition decreases TA.
