We just moved to a home with an in ground pool. Previous owner said big storm came through last fall and dumped leaves, etc. they tarped it after that. We pulled the tarp last week and it was Black water and stunk. Got the sand filter opened and running. Pool store said to shock it a lot which we have. I have 12 gallons of shock in it now. We changed from Black, Dark green, light green. Now has a foam across the pool. I have the filter running, have scooped a lot of algae off the bottom. We can't afford to drain and refill and we have a well with high iron, so trying to fix what we have. Do we keep shocking it? Filter, backwash, keep skimming off the top?

Welcome to TFP!!!

You need a good test kit. Order that now. Link-->Test Kits Compared
To get over analysis paralysis, order the TF-Pro. Link-->TF-Pro
If you have a Salt Water Chlorine Generator, get the TF-pro SALT. Link-->Test Kits

Download Pool Math. Link-->PoolMath
Configure your pool. Use your TFP Uname/Password. Use it to figure out how to add 5ppm of liquid chlorine PER DAY until your kit arrives.

When your kit arrives, post a full set of results: FC, CC, pH, TA, CH, CYA.

Then, follow the SLAM process to clear the pool...Link-->SLAM Process

As for "shock" - you noted gallons. But to be explicit, only use Pool liquid chlorine! In the Lakeville area, you have a couple of Menard's within easy distance. Buy their pool liquid chlorine, cheap, strong, and judging by my Maplewood store, very fresh.

Get 3-4 cases from them. Between them and Wal-Mart, you can get all the chemicals you need. One of our major goals is to make it cheap, easy, and to prevent massive amounts of money from flowing in to pool stores for magic potions you never need nor should be putting in the pool.

What specific products have you put in so far? Anything besides pure liquid chlorine?

Just liquid Chlorine Klean Shock as it was algae. This morning has a much lighter yellowish green and some algae finally floating to the top, so think it's working slowly but working.

Definitely try to remove as much debris as possible while you await your kit and are in the holding pattern adding 5ppm of liquid chlorine a day.
You’ll need a large leaf net scooper - one with rounded edges. You’ll be scooping blind but the more debris you remove the better. Once you feel like you have gotten the large stuff you can move on to blind vacuuming - there are leaf canisters that you can put on your vac hose to prevent clogging.
Vacuuming to waste is helpful for heavy debris at first - you can attempt to brush everything to one area and just vac to waste the bulk to avoid losing too much water. Then switch back to filter for the remainder of your vacuum session.
Many a black swamp has been turned into an oasis here at tfp using the
SLAM Process. We’ll be here waiting for your first test results to really get the party started!
* also while you wait - fill out your signature as thoroughly as possible. It really helps us help you with most specific advice.
