Help! We have had our Coleman w/porthole pool for 3 years. Salt water filter. It has been great and so easy. This year we thought we had algae so we have done everything. Vacuumed, to waste, tinge, backwash, algicide, triple shock, keep high level of chlorine for days, ran filter/pump for days…it keeps coming back. How do we get rid of this stuff? Pool levels are perfect, water is crystal clear yet still this stuff at the bottom. HELP! (See pics)

Welcome!

If you have algae the levels aren’t perfect. Can you post a set of test results? If you’ve been using some pool store potions or test strips to test the water, that’s likely the cause. How large is the pool?

You can add your pool information to your signature, and that will help us (and yourself!) out for any other questions you might have in the future.

Usually a good SLAM Process will take care of algae issues, but doing that properly requires a good test kit with an FAS-DPD chlorine test. Do you have one?

Hello All, thank you for your replies, help, & advice. Very helpful but the SLAM process seemed a bit much, especially since ALL my levels were perfect with repeated testing, my water was crystal clear, and since I previously did a milder version of that already with the triple shock method and it wasn’t getting worse. So over the last few days … vacuumed and then kept filter running with vacuum attached (so the water at the bottom was being pulled, not water at top through skimmer) for 12 hrs (then 12 hours no filter), and kept all levels good. After day 1, there was only a very little pile in the middle. Progress, so repeated for day 2, and YAYYYY it’s gone!! So far that seems to be working. Going to do a few more days of the same and see if it keeps but so far so good. Thinking since my pool doesn’t have a return at the bottom, maybe all the water (w/ dead algae) wasn’t fully getting filtered. Thinking the dead algae was light enough to be diluted easily (upon walking near it), but too heavy to be suspended long enough to fully get pulled into the filter from the skimmer return. I will give an update next week. Thanks again.

That’s some good news. The reason we ask for test results is that what TFP considers good results is much different than what pool stores consider good. Since it’s looks like your new to TFP, here’s the recommendations and if you follow them, there’s a good chance of not needing to shock the pool anymore or getting algae again.

If you want to ensure you have killed all the algae run an OCLT...... Perform the Overnight FC Loss Test (OCLT)

The only things that consume chlorine are sunlight (UV) or organics, so if you're losing more than 1 ppm of chlorine overnight, you've got algae. Even clear water can have algae.

You don't say what test kit you have, but TFP advice relies on having the accurate, repeatable test info that you get from one of the following kits:
Swimming Pool Test Kits Compared

If you plan to stick around to learn our method, It's helpful if you fill out your signature so people don't have to ask for your pool info every time you have a question:

We hope you will stay!
