Trying to get my pool ready to open. It’s green. The worst I’ve ever seen it. I’ve tested my levels all are ph is <6 cya is 0, chlorine is 0 alkalinity is the o my thing ok.
I’ve put 11 gallons of bleach in today, and 6 lbs baking soda and a gallon of muriatic acid. The color is slightly lighter this evening, what should I do?

Welcome to the forum!
Can you fill out your signature so we know more about your pool?
What test kit are you using to get the results?
Please post your full set of test results
FC
CC
pH
TA
CH
CYA

I suggest you read ABC's of Pool Water Chemistry and consider reviewing the entire Pool School eBook.

OK -- so your pH is way too low. And you have no FC.
Why did you add acid when you added the baking soda??
Use PoolMath and determine how much borax to add to take your pH from 6.8 to 7.2. Add it and circulate for 30 minutes. Test pH and again and repeat until you get to pH of 7.2.

You need to SLAM Process. To do that you need a FAS-DPD test kit to test FC above 5 ppm. You can go to TFTestkits.net right now and order one.
While you are waiting on that, add 5 ppm FC worth of liquid chlorine each evening to your pool. When you get that kit, let us know.
Also, in the mean time, if you are confident in the CYA test, you should add 20 ppm worth of CYA using the sock method.

Ok, got my kit today. I did what you suggested. I tested the water and here are the results:
pH -8
TA- 50 ppm
CYA- <30 ppm
Calcium hardness- 220 ppm
FC-0

As you have a green pool, first do this.
Add 10 ppm FC worth of liquid chlorine to the pool. Circulate it for 15 minutes. Take a sample and test for FC and CC. If FC is greater than 5 and CC is 1 or less, go into SLAM after lowering your pH to 7.2. If the FC is low and CC high, post here before doing anything else.

I assume you have added the 20 ppm CYA we discussed earlier. If not, add that. Assume you have 30 ppm CYA in water for your SLAM level FC.

First, it would be helpful to zero-in on the capacity of your pool. Knowing that will determine how much of what needs to be added to your water. You’ll be using Pool Math which can be found using the menu in the upper left. Once you’ve got a ballpark number of gallons, post that in your signature along with filtration, etc. so the experts can help you.

Also, although your test kit may suffice, you’ll want a TF 100 test kit and a SpeedStir. Trust me, you’ll want it.

Ok, you have your homework assignment. Report back for the next installment.

Still struggling here in Indiana......we have had excessive rain every day which makes this even more difficult. The water was looking better over the weekend, but now is green again. I can't seem to keep FC in the pool. I've done the CYA with the sock method. I don't know what else to do. I've tested it and here are the results:
FC- 0
CC-0.2
PH-7.0
TA-60
CYA->30

I am beginning to think I may have to drain the pool and start over. Help!

Ok - the 15 minute test was for ammonia, and sounds like you passed it.

So now, you need to raise your FC to shock level (16 ppm) and test in a couple hours and add again. Stay at it. Brush often.

Ok, I have been working diligently and it is looking SO much better. It is just really cloudy. What should I do to clear it up? Here are my results today:

Your FC is far too low. You need to keep at the target as shown 6 to 11 at all times. What is your combined chlorine? You really need to get a proper test kit if you want to get this right. Once you have the proper test kit, post your numbers and the experts can help from there. You most likely need to SLAM but again a proper test kit is needed for that.

from my understanding you keep SLAMing until your pool is clear, even if you pass OCLT.

Are you still actively SLAMing your pool? Or did you stop because it looks better?

With a CYA of 80 your shock level will be far greater than the shock level when your CYA was 30-40.

I am using the suggested test kit. I had stopped actively SLAMming because it looked better.

I am using the suggested test kit, and those are the results.
I will continue SLAMming.
