A neighbor recommended I post on this forum to ask for recommendations for a safety solution and winter cover for our pool. we are in slc, UT. We bought the house a few years ago. We believe the backyard pool was built in the 80s. It’s gunite, salt water, they estimate 20-22k gallon for pool 8-10k for built in elevated spa.
we have been covering it with a tarp anchored with ropes and cinder block in winter which is not ideal bc our 70lb dog tried to go in by walking on tarp (greater swimmer who goes in and out several times a day in summer via dog door to backyard) and before the surface freezes in fall and when it thaws in spring he could potentially fall through and drown.
we also now have a 4mo old puppy who is curious about water but hasn’t found the stairs yet (currently being let out only in front yard with supervision) so she is a drowning risk both when open and closed and a new toddler who will not be blocked by baby gates for much longer (which is how we keep him upstairs, pool is downstairs in back so he would have to open two gates to get down to pool level).
we want a year round fence and a winter safety cover or net. the problem is the irregular shape including the spa which cuts into the deep end of the pool. the other issue is lava rock which immediately abuts the deep end. this means that most solutions cover the shallow end but leave the deep end accessible which to me is more dangerous (ie if they fall in, there is no way to get out bc stairs are in shallow end).
the other issue is not wanting to spend much since we will likely either replace the pool completely in the next few years or fill it in (hard to justify expense and they don’t even know how to get machinery into our backyard now, we live on the side of a mountain).
when I searched stuff like “katchakid” and other safety net companies they don’t exist here in UT. we got a quote for a loop lock and I want to say it was btwn 20-30 and they said they still weren’t positive it was possible and the cover wouldn’t last as long bc of the lava rock on the deep end which could damage it. it may not be obvious from pics but the land slopes down significantly behind and around the lava rock as it goes toward the wood fence.
open to any and all suggestions. thanks!
