Help Specing out my pool equipment

Hello everyone my name is Mike,

First time pool owner. I’m redoing my patio and while I’m at it I’m redoing my pool. The waterline tile is old along with the coping and the finish inside.

Im not new to handyman work or plumbing for that matter. So I’ve cut and trenched my concrete patio to redo all the plumbing for the jets, skimmer, and vacuum line and am moving my pool equipment behind a corner of the house.

Where I am running into some confusion is specing out what equipment to buy since my current filter is wayyy undersized for the pool, my light is shot, and my pump is on its way out. Plus I want to change over to salt water. I’ve tried to research the forum as much as possible to avoid asking questions and wasting time of others, but I think I have just run myself in circles. My pool is 16k gallons and not in a screen enclosure and am looking at using the following equipment. My understanding with variable speed pumps is to go as big as you can afford because theoretically it should be more energy efficient.

Pentair Intelliflo3 VSF 3hp
Pentair 420sq ft clean and clear cartridge filter
Pentair IC-40 salt cell with power supply
Pentair Architecture Series multi color light 120v
Pentair intellivalve valve actuator.

Originally my plan was to get the pump with the I/o board to control the led pool light and to run a intellivalve valve for the vacuum line. That way it could open the valve for the vac line at the same time as the pump would ramp up, and then once the pump slowed back down it would close the vac line to keep all the flow coming from the skimmer. Does this setup make sense? Can I control the intellivalve and the led pool light just fine with the pump I/o or should I get an eachtouch system to control everything? Just want to make sure before I spend all of this money.

Thank you all and sorry for the long winded post. I hope everyone is having a Happy Thanksgiving

Mike,

I would never, ever, recommend the IntelliValve... and I am a big Pentair fan.. Just get any of the other standard actuators and you will be fine.

Everything else looks pretty good to me..

Not sure on the light, as I have no experience with them..

The new IntelliFlo3 can not directly control a valve actuator.. But pretty cheap to build your own circuit to move the actuator with a relay from the pump's I/O card.

The I/O card only has two relays.. One MUST be used to control the SWCG, that only leaves you one relay for the light OR the valve actuator.

Thanks,

Jim R.

Thank you for the speedy reply Jim!

Okay so just the regular pentair valve actuator should be good?

Dang that’s a tough one. I didn’t realize I’d need a relay to run the swcg. I guess I should have figured that.

What if I got the EasyTouch 4PSC-IC40 instead of the IntelliFlo3 with the I/O board? You thinks that’s worth it to control the 3 relays? My only fear is I’ve heard the EasyTouch 4 is older so I’m not sure how to app functionality on it compares to the app functionality with the I/O board.

Thank you again,

Mike

You need the Color Synch Controller to control the Architectural light using the Pentair HOME app.

You cannot change the colors easily using the IO Board relay.

That lets you use one IO Board relay for the SWG and another for the actuator hack.

Perfect! That is a nice easy fix. I’ll order that and get the pump with the I/O board and then I can do everything!

Thank you both for all of your help! I really hope both of you have a Happy Thanksgiving!
