Hello Everyone!

I am helping one of my good friends with the plumbing for his to be built pool and was hoping for some input from you guys on how you would do it (i.e how many skimmers, jets, pumps, returns to pool/spa e.t.c).

Here are the to be built specs:

Pool: 14 by 30 feet 6 feet deep the whole way.
Spa: 6x6 and pours into pool
Waterfall on opposing side form spa.

Just looking for how you guys would route valve placement and secound pump if needed.

You might clarify your question...it isn't clear to me what you are asking.

Waterfall on opposing side form spa.
This is not clear. Is the spa on a short or long side? Does this mean the spa is on one end of the pool and the water fall is at the other end of the pool?

As for skimmers, jets, pumps, returns, it is really dependent on placement/orientation (N/S/E/W) and location of the spa.

Please post whatever you have with respect to the pool design, the orientation of the pool WRT the compass, the location of the spa, the location of the waterfall, the city you are putting this in, location of the pad relative to the pool and distance, etc. Any drawings, diagrams etc. will help.

Hello everyone,

I have a lot more information about the plan and have attached the sketch for my friends pool.

The sketch is perfectly aligned with N,E,S,W. And north is the top of the photo, West is the left. There is heavy tree cover on the north side but we get lots of sun between the house and roughly 6-8 feet from the back of the property. Therefore It would make me believe that the sun would be on the pool a lot of the day. Located in Toronto. The pool would be open from late April-May to end of September - Early October. Also note that the property is sloped from West to east as it is a ravine property.

I have read through the package the pool builders(Solda pools) gave them and had a few things to mention.

The pool builders want to put in a bunch of equipment from different brands. Here is a breakdown of everything they want to put in.

Pump: Pentair Superflow VS
Filter: Hayward Profilter Sand(unsure of size), or pentair clean and clear.
Heater: Raypack or Pentair(did not mention BTU)
Sanitation: Hayward Low Salt
Automation: Pentair easytouch or Hayward Omnilogic

Also take note of the SPA and waterfall in sketch.

I would like help decided on if you would change all the equipment to one brand and what specs to get(THP, BTU, Filter size e.t.c) and if you would take a different salt cell. I have had all HAYWARD equipment in the past and had an amazing experience. I don't know if you would recommend going Pentair or Hayward? Also would having two pumps be necessary or would T ing off the 1 pump be enough for the waterfall.

Also would love if I could get an opinion on jet placement and skimmer placement. The spa pours into the pool.

Thanks a lot.

Lots of questions to be answered to give you more help:
1) is the spa standalone or integrated with the pool.
2) is there a spillover on the spa? If no, what is the proposed equipment for the spa and how are they going to integrate the spa with the pool?
3) Is there a separate pump for the spa, or integrated?
4) What types of configurations does the owner expect? Run spa, run spa and pool heater, run separate, run water feature etc.?
5) how many returns? Specifications on piping from returns to the pool?
6) are there jets or blower in the spa?

In general, one skimmer is not much, I'd get at least two, and face them into the prevailing wind. Returns can circulate water, but cannot overcome prevailing winds.

On the equipment side, I don't think you can go wrong with either Pentair or Hayward. I choose one and go with same/same equipment.

The easytouch has been obsoleted: IntelliTouch and EasyTouch Officially Obsolete

I suggest the new IntelliCenter The IC has 100 schedule, can be updated using the internet and has phone control built in. I can't comment on the Omni logic...and would need to know more about what you want to control and how for someone like @ajw22 to comment.

VSP: Get the largest VSP you can get. Will save money in electricity bill because you can move the same water at a lower speed. Like the Pentair Intelliflo or the Hayward Tristar VS 950.
Filter: Get the biggest cartridge you can get. Large allow you to run the entire year without cleaning. Lots of us like the Pentair Clean and Clear (at least a 420 or 520).
Heater: If you are going with Pentair, get a pentair mastertemp...it can integrate RS485 with the Intellicenter. Get the biggest you can get.
SWG: I would get a normal salt cell, pentair or hayward, unless you are required by law to use low salt (may be the case in CA).

Post up more requirements and others will chime in...

Looks like the builder is having a clearance sale on all the old and obsolete equipment he has sitting around.

Pump: Pentair Superflow VS
Filter: Hayward Profilter Sand(unsure of size), or pentair clean and clear.
Heater: Raypack or Pentair(did not mention BTU)
Sanitation: Hayward Low Salt
Automation: Pentair easytouch or Hayward Omnilogic

  • The Superflo VS pump is a medium head pump and too small to give the low necessary for a spa and waterfall.
  • The Low Salt cell will be too small for a 19,000 gallon pool. We recommend a cell be 2X the pool volume so need 40K cell capacity.
  • The EasyTouch and Omnilogic are both older systems.
If you want Pentair:
  • Intelliflo3 pump
  • CCP 320 or 420 filter
  • MasterTemp 400K heater
  • IntelliCenter automantion bundled with Intellichlor IC40 cell
If you want Hayward:
  • Tristar 950 VS pump
  • Swimclear 325 cartridge filter
  • MasterTemp 400K or Hayward H400FDN
  • OmniPL automation HLBPLUS4W comes bundled with a TCell940 for pools up to 40,000 gallons
Get your friend on here so we can discuss this directly with hi/her.

Will connect. The Hayward bundle is not available in our region. Would you still recommend getting the tristar 950 omni that comes with the omni hub and just get the Aquarite pcb expansion board for connection.

No, OmniHub only supports two valve actuators and your friend needs three to control the spa and waterfall.

Also, I like to have the CBs in the automation Load Center panel.

The OmniHub is a bit of a kludge to make it work for existing pool retrofits. I do not recommend it for new builds.

The S340 is variable output. So when you set it at 50% generation, it generates at 50% production all the time.
The 940 is old school. So at 50% generation, it runs at 100% for 90 minutes, then 0% for 90 minutes.

For the future, I do not believe there will be able to be non OEM cells used in the 340 system. The system checks to be sure the cell is OEM before it will work.
