HELP i'm in a complete mess and don't know which way to turn

Re: HELP i'm in a complete mess and don't know which way to

It's still raining.

I just poured in 2 182 oz of bleach...tried to pour it all around.

This is just so disheartening.

I believe i'll just order a new pump tomorrow. It will take until probably Tues to get here.

Murphy's law i suppose.

Have a good Friday all.

Re: HELP i'm in a complete mess and don't know which way to

If you do order a new pump, consider getting a 2-spead, 3/4 to 1 hp. Let us know if you want recommendations. With that said, your current pump maybe just fine or easy to fix.

Re: HELP i'm in a complete mess and don't know which way to

If you do get it out, you can do the sniff test. Seriously, you can smell the motor body. If it smells like dirt or oil, it's not burnt, if you smell an acrid ozone smell, it is burnt or shorted. The smell never really goes away.

Here's good thoughts it's a rock stuck in the impeller and free to fix.

Re: HELP i'm in a complete mess and don't know which way to

Update:

Ok, since it rained till after i went to bed on Thursday and i worked Friday i made an executive decision and ordered a new pump.

Locally, the cheapest i found was 311 plus tax. Online, i found one through Amazon and it was 145 including tax and shipping. It has shipped and will be here Tuesday. I think i made the right decision. That pump may not have been completely shot but, if you'll remember, after i changed the sand i was having a problem with the sucking of it. It would suck good for about 2 or 3 hours and then go way down. I was having to turn it off and on again to get it to work good about 3-4 times a day.

Actually this may have been a problem back when i was trying to get the pool to clear up before I flocked it. I did not notice the sucking at that time to be honest, but for some reason i noticed it after i changed the sand. So, not positive on that.

Also, i found out, from the renters i had here a couple of years ago, that they had that pump repaired due to a problem. So, the pump is old.

I think it was time.

So, what i'm doing while waiting is bleaching the pool in the Am and at Pm with 311 oz of bleach, stirring it up after i put the bleach in, using the net to scoop out any debris that floats in and scrubbing the sides and bottom daily. Appears to be working, it has now been 48 hours since the pump broke and my water is still clear and i can see the bottom all the way across.

Keeping fingers crossed. Tuesday can't get here soon enough.

I'm so excited you can still see the bottom! I was hoping this wouldn't be a setback for you... look at you, an expert on your pool!!

Re: HELP i'm in a complete mess and don't know which way to

Well you win....I've got the feeling the pump would have me in tears by now. :( Here's to hoping you can keep above this, as I'm sure you can.

Did all the cloudyness go away??

Re: HELP i'm in a complete mess and don't know which way to

BethyM...thank you!!!!!

Leebo....Yes pretty much. I mean it's not absolutely crystal clear, but so far even with the pump off for now over 48 hours, still pretty clear....

Oh and i'm way past the tears with this pool. I'm way past a quest. I'm way past about everything with this pool. Now, i just take it day to day and roll with it. LOL

This pic just now

Re: HELP i'm in a complete mess and don't know which way to

That one is okay, but for your pool and filter, the 1 hp version of that pump would have been a better fit. Even better than that, and what I would have recommended is a 2-speed that was 1 hp...and you would have been able to run most time on low and in the end use 1/2 the power.

Re: HELP i'm in a complete mess and don't know which way to

Speaking of power. I was wondering. I set my pump to run 24 x 7. Is that what i should do? Am i wearing it out running it that much? I know those automatic timer things are cheap. But, i wasn't sure if i should run the pump less than all the time? What do ya'll think?

Re: HELP i'm in a complete mess and don't know which way to

The auto timers can be cheap, if they can run with your pump. We have a 2hp, 2speed and it pulls 16amps. Several timers we looked at listed how many HP and many were only 1HP.... Just saying all that to say that it's not as easy as grabbing one at the hardware store (I so wish it was!)

Your water looks amazing!! Good to see it finally turned around for you. Those swims have been earned by the sweat of your brow!

Re: HELP i'm in a complete mess and don't know which way to

During the shocking process I run 24 hrs, but under normal conditions I run mine much less. You want the water to turn over at least one time a day. So how long that takes depends on the flow in your system. There are two ways to figure that out. If you are smart enough you can make an educated guess at how long it will take to turn the water over one time. If not you can just start reducing the time until the water starts getting a little cloudy and then increase it back to keep it clear. In other words by trial and error you can find what your pool takes. I will let some of the people smarter than I calculate how long you should run your pump. But while you are shocking keep running the pump all the time.

Re: HELP i'm in a complete mess and don't know which way to

Ok, sounds great!!!! Thanks. I really had no idea so i just kept it on continuously. Which, now, i'm thinking is probably not the best for the pump or my electricity bill LOL

Re: HELP i'm in a complete mess and don't know which way to

Hi Nikki. For some reason, I'm not getting notifications anymore - so haven't seen your updates until tonight. Yipeeeee that you (and all of us) can now see the bottom! It's beautiful!!!

After our first season with a single-speed pump, it was running us $90/mo to run it 10 hours/day (which is how long it takes to turn once for our pool). Second season, we paid $214 for the same make pump, but a 2-speed. We run it 24/7/365 on low (which is VERY quiet) and only turn it off so I can backwash occasionally. Under the old rate (when the old pump was running us $90/mo), the new one ran us $30/mo. Under our new, lower rate, we're spending more like $20/mo to run it all the time. It sounds great after three seasons - we're now going into our fourth season with it.

Congrats on your progress. I'm so excited and happy for you, though I know you're not done yet. Hang in there (hug and pat)!

Re: HELP i'm in a complete mess and don't know which way to

Thank you Cherie, glad to see you back, and all!!!! If i had had more time to understand the different pumps, i know i would have made the wiser choice, as Linen also suggested. As it is, i was just desperate to get that pool spinning again with the very real possibility of getting a cloudy green mess back. I just did the fastest thing and ordered the same pump.

I'll keep all of that in mind when i buy my next one.

Still clear as a glass of water this morning. Gonna keep stirring and adding bleach. Today i'm gonna get in and really get that water stirred and thes sides and bottom scrubbed good. and make sure I'm not getting any algae starting behind my steps and so on.... Also, it's really hot today and i don't want to lose this tan i got started on LOL.

Almost three days down and two days to go...pump should be here Tuesday. So far so good.

Re: HELP i'm in a complete mess and don't know which way to

Your going to be fine. The down time can be a good thing in that any remaining flock can settle to the bottom and you can vacuum it when you get your new pump going. In the meantime, consider removing the old pump and taking the basket off and seeing if there is a blockage on the impeller. You may be able to get it working and then sell it on Craig's List to offset the cost of the new pump.
