I dont even know where to start. Salt water pool with connected spa. Last week channel drains from both spa and main pool where removed and replaced with 2 round drains due to leaks. Filled the pool and spa...turned system on and immediately on turning spa jets on: spa drained with 5 min.

Welcome to TFP.

More information is needed. How do you control and switch between your pool and spa?

It sounds like you have a misset valve or actuator.

Post pics of your equipment pad In POOL mode and SPA mode.

J,

I agree with Allen, sounds like an automated valve positioning issue. We need to see some pics of your equipment pad.

I find it hard to believe that you had leaking main drains in both your spa and your pool. How did you determine they were both leaking???

Thanks,

Jim R.

Thank you for your kind reception and welcome. I am attaching the following pictures. I think you can make out the spa wall in some. In the others not sure if spa or main drain of pool.

I will send the other pictures relating to the equipment tomorrow morning

Here is the interface that we use to control the system.

The main drain demonstrated a leak via a video showing ink being sucked into the rim of the drain. We were told that these channel drains were notorious for these types of problem and that since we were doing the main drain might as well do the spa.

Couple of random thoughts:
1) I will definitely send pictures of the pad in the am
2) I remember the contractor turning some of the valves on the equipment prior to the demolition.
3) I just realized the when we turned on the pool and spa we did not get the normal spillover from the spa into the pool that always occurred.
4) That is it for tonight. We are currently finishing building our retirement home in North Carolina and guess what...NO POOL!

This is the pad with EVERYTHING in the off position.

J,

You have two automated valves that select Pool mode or Spa mode. Both valves in your pic are set to the Pool mode.

You need to select the Spa mode and then ensure that both valves have moved about 180 degrees to the Spa mode.

Let us know how that test goes..

It appears to me that your Spa Jets are on their own pump. All that pump does is suck water from the spa and return the same water to the spa. No valves are involved with running the Spa jets.

Thanks,

Jim R.

Jim,
Thank you so much. I have to be honest with you...if it does not involve a uterus, I have no idea what to do with it. (You can guess what my day job might be).

So...
1) I turn on the spa
2) Watch for movement on the two black valves
3) What is the next step if nothing or only one valve moves???

J,

Both valves should move..

If only one moves then something is wrong with the other valve.

It could be that someone set the little On-Off-On toggle switch to the center off position.
It could mean that the actuator is bad.
It could be that the cable to the actuator is bad or disconnected inside the automation.
It could mean that your automation is not working for that one valve.

Let's cross that bridge when you get to it.

Please let us know if both actuators move or not.

Both actuators should have the little toggle switch. Depending on the actuator, they may not be in the same location.

Thanks,

Jim R.

Ok...Riddle me this:
(I will put these questions in separate post so that the questions have associated pictures)

1) This one does not move automatically. I checked the switch and both valves are on Power 1

2) When I moved it manually (following the movement of the one that moved automatically) I finally got the normal spill over from the spa into the pool.

J,

The valve is the above pic is your Return valve. The other automated valve that is in front of the pump is called the Intake valve. Here is how they should work together.

In the Pool mode, the Intake valve should be set to suck water from the pool and the Return valve should be set to send the water back to the Pool.

In the Spa mode, the Intake valve should be set to suck water from the Spa and the Return valve should be set to send the water back to the Spa.

These valves have to move together in sync.

The little toggle switch is not there for you to routinely move the valve, it is there so that you can initially set the valve in the correct position. After that, you should never need to use the toggle switch again.

Given your day job, the smart thing to do is to replace the actuator on the valve that does not work, or have it replaced.

If you really want to troubleshoot some more, you can go into your automation and swap the cables going to the Intake and Return connectors inside the automation. Then switch between the pool mode and spa mode and see what happens.

If the bad actuator is still bad, and the good actuator is still good, it means the actuator on the valve that does not move is bad.
If the bad actuator works and the good actuator is now bad, then your automation system is the problem.

Thanks,

Jim R.

Jim and all. Thanks!!!!
I really appreciate everyone pitching in. I panicked when I turned the pool on (in my usual fashion) and 1) no water spilled over the spa waterfall 2) the water from the spa drained significantly in the spa.

I was worried that the guy who repaired the pool either 1) put the wrong pipes together, broke the equipment, or left it in the off position.

With your help "we" were able to isolate the problem. If anyone has recommendations for known pool company in Miami I would appreciate greatly.

Well, back to my day job to pay for this side hustle.
