New to the forum, first time pool owner here! Happy to be here and looking forward to giving and receiving solid pool advice.

Recently purchased a bankruptcy sale home that has an 18-33 above ground pool. The liner was long gone and it was basically a weed garden, growing weeds over the tops of the rails; but the structure is sound.

I have cleaned it up and installed a new liner. Rebuilt the sand filter and installed new tubing. Luckily the pump, Hayward Power-Flo Matrix, seems to be in good working order.

However, the volume of water being pulled through the skimmer by the pump seems to be excessive. If the water level isn’t above the half way point on the flapper door, it actually starts to whirlpool and sucking air. The pump is plugged directly into a 20amp outlet.

Is this normal? Otherwise is seems to be working normally. Any advice is greatly appreciated!

Hi, welcome to TFP! I have a few questions for you. First, what is the horsepower rating of your pump? Is it a single speed or a two speed pump? Second, in the photo it looks like the filter is set on winterize. Do you set the filter to filter or to recirculate while the pool is running? Does your weir door in the skimmer stick in the down position or float freely when the pump is on?

Thanks for your response!

The pump is 1.5 HP. Not sure if it’s got another speed, seems to run at the same RPM all the time and there isn’t a way to change that far as I can tell. I attached a pic of the label, but I can’t seem to make out too much from it.image.jpg

The filter is set to “filter” and it keeps the flapper door pinned down inward allowing a heavy flow of incoming water.
