All I wanted is a pool and outdoor shower but need to build a house to get it. So, I am in process of designing my new home in Matlacha, FL. In case you don't know, Matlacha is a small artist/bohemian/fishing village located on the west side of Florida. You get there from Cape Coral by crossing "the fishingest bridge in world". I have a beautiful view of Matlacha Sound on one side of my property and plan to have my lanai/pool overlook it.
At this point, I am still working with the designer to get plans that I can afford. I have selected a builder and am simultaneously working on the contract with him. I spoke to his pool designer/installer once to get an idea of options and costs. Of course, I want much more than I can afford. At this point, all I have decided is that it will be a saltwater pool, heated with solar panels and an auxiliary pool heater and covered with a panoramic screen cage (lots of bugs in Matlacha.)
I am here to learn more about selecting materials/equipment/etc., overseeing the build/installation and maintaining the pool. I am a bit worried about the latter because I don't want to rely on a pool company or pool store. However, I was pretty bad at maintaining a 40 gallon aquarium so a pool really scares me.
So that is my situation is a nutshell. I plan to start by learning the basics on this site and then will probably have lots of questions down the road. In that regard, I want to thank all of you in advance for your time and advice!
