Heating in Northern climates

Hi guys and gals..

Do you guys heat your pool and if so - do you maintain the heat at certain temp? like 80? or you just heat it to 84 on the day you will use it?

Our water temp without heater is around 65-70 in May/June and Sept/October and we have the heater but just want to know the best way to heat the water. Thanks,

We installed our heater last August in anticipation of extending the season into Oct - maybe even Nov as our PB said he has some clients close after Thanksgiving. As the weather cooled and summer became fall we maintained in the low 80s (the Mrs prefers 84). However, when the night time temp really started to dip in mid-October, we were losing an inch or more some nights to evaporation. The solar cover helped, but it's just a PITA. I didn't even take it out of the barn this year.

This season we're just going to bring up the temp prior to humans swimming (the Golden Retrievers don't mind the cold water). This weekend might be our first use as PA weather has been unseasonably cold this spring. We had snow squalls last Saturday and it is expected to be in the 80s today.

Hope this gives some context.
