Looking for advice on a heater. I’m very efficient minded and really like the heat pump one for its efficiency from what I’ve read. I live in a rural setting and I’m not liking the numbers that propane ones are coming up with. Spoke with a vendor and my electric coop provider and it just makes sense long term to go with a heat pump. May take a bit longer to get my money back being they are more dollars. A few years ago I put in a geo thermal system for my house and liked the idea of doing one for the pool to being it’s so efficient until I found out they are $7000. Not happening.
With that being said I’m looking for some advice on brands and those who have heat pumps and their opinions. What do you find is a good temp to maintain? After 3 years of being a pool owner it’s that time. Thanks in advance!

A heat pump is a great choice to heat your pool. Propane is generally the most expensive heating option. We use solar panels to do most of the heating and BTU the heat pump to dial it in just right. A solar bubble cover is also a good addition to help keep the heat in overnight.

Any of the name brand heat pumps are fine, most use HVAC components from big name HVAC manufacturers. We have a smaller 50k BTU heat pump from Hayward. HP50HA.

Hi
I am installing a 16x24 oval flat bottom and was looking at that HP50HA, what size pool are you using it in?

I like the price point but don’t want to buy something too small.

thanks

I did a 400k btu propane heater because I have a hot tub and no access to natural gas which would have been better. At my current price of propane of $1.80 I figured it cost me $7.00 per hour to run the heater and it raises the pool temp 3 degrees in 2 hours.

I’ll probably try to add a cost saving system in the future but I just finished my pool so I’ll see how it goes for a few years. I have a black bottom pool so that should hold heat a little better. We’ll see

I’m pretty sure I will be going with a heat pump. I looked into solar panels as well and like the idea just limited on my square footage of southern exposure on my roof. Another one I considered was a wood fired one. One thing great about today is there are many more options than just a few yrs ago.
Is propane just that high where you’re at? I use a summer fill program and pay less than a $1.00 per gallon. My only propane use is my stove and if I fill my 500 gallon tank it lasts me 4-5 years so I’m fortunate for that as we know propane can get high.
Thanks again!
