Hayward XStream - Can’t Fully Close Lid

Hi all - recently moved into a place with an existing above ground pool. It has a Hayward XStream cartridge filter. I cleaned it for the first time and could not get the top fully back onto the unit to where the ring locks click. I actually think I got it back on tighter than it used to be, since I now cannot get it off anymore (deal with that later). Between the cleaning (just a garden hose) and the tighter fit the pressure has actually gone up slightly - maybe from 17 to 18 PSI.

My question is - is it unsafe to run the pump with the filter top not “fully” on? It seems plenty tight to me, certainly watertight, but the rings are not clicked into place the way they’re supposed to be.

Welcome to TFP.

Yes, it is dangerous to run a filter without the lid secure. The filter is under pressure and the lid can blow off causing injury and damage as well as draining your pool.

Did you lube the O ring on the lid with Pool Lube - Further Reading

I remember @1poolman1 advised someone recently on how to get a tough lid closed.

Thank you for your response.

My next question is then, I am betting the system was run for quite some time with the filter top not clicked down all the way. Could that cause hazardous degradation? Is there anything to check for? How do I know when I need to replace the filter in general?

No visible cracks or strain on the unit.

Hazardous degradation? What is that?

If the top can be latched the filter is fine.

This might be a little to late but I had the same problem with getting the lid to sit down so the lock band would turn to the locking position. so what I did was took some pool o-ring lubricant and put a pea size amount around the lid lip and on the lip of the tank ,and it all came together like magic and sealed and locked with no problem.I do this everytime I have to take the lid off to clean the filter. Hope this helps .
