Keep your chlorine levels up and if there is any algae behind the light, it won't hurt anything. There is always a tremendous amount of dirt behind a light as water doesn't really circulate there.
The face plate twists off then depending on the niche the light is twisted out or held in by a screw. I never got the light out but did get the faceplate off.
Thanks for checking! I completed SLAM so I never took light completely out. I just removed faceplate and pushed lots of water behind the light (while at SLAM). There are small holes where water can get behind the light when the faceplate is off.
