My Hayward VSP pump worked fine for 4 yrs then one day last year, it started making noises and after a few minutes it stopped and appeared to be seized... the driver showed " check motor and wet end for binding "
I opened the motor and found the internal magnets in pieces causing the lock.... the bearings where ok, Fan was intact, no ventilation obstructions, no signs of seal failure, no corrosion or signs of water inside, never noticed vibrations on the pump or pipes... I dismissed it as a premature failure bought a new motor (same driver) ... today, 13 moths later, the same thing happened.
it could be a coincidence but I installed a Hayward Omnilogic to control the pump and valves on March 2022, exactly 14 months before the first pump failed) then the second pump failed 13 months later... I wonder if maybe the pump surrenders its protections when it is remote controlled?
The operating pressure has been less than 10 psi @ 1000 rpm (for 22 hrs a day) and 12 psi@2700rpm 2 hrs daily.... from time time I run it full speed 25psi@3500rpm for 2-4 hrs for the water features when the pool is in use. Temp today was 110F... however last year the other pump failed in March @75F
Another coincidence; both motors failed the day I stopped the pump for around 4 hours ( in 2023 to clean the filter and today to clean the cell)... both times it started fine and ran for hours before failing (it primed immediately after a few seconds)
I wonder if there are some internal contractions (and glue defect) after running for months then being stopped; .however I have stopped the pump many times before without an issue.... I read another case in reddit from a guy that had the same experience... 4 year old VSP950 pump, magnets broke hours after cleaning the filter too.... uncanny
I will contact Hayward for support, but any ideas what could be causing this ? or how to prevent future failures?
Also, any idea where I can buy just the rotor since this looks like it could be recurring thing?
