Hayward sand filter

I need to clean the filter basket. If the filter is in the closed setting, do I need to plug both the skimmer entry hole and return hole? Or just the skimmer hole?

I would do both. When pump is off, the pool water has no way of knowing that it isn’t supposed to enter the return.
