Hayward robot cleaner

A quick question. I have an in ground concrete pool with a DE filter and i use an older model hayward robot cleaner. In order to get sufficient suction i have to cut off the bottom drain and 1 skimmer when i vacuum. My question is, do i need to turn off the filter before i cut the skimmer and then turn back on or can i just turn the knob that shuts the skimmer while the filter and pump are still running ? I'm always afraid of breaking a pipe if i cut it off while it's running.

In most cases it is fine to open and close valves while the pump is running. Most pool plumbing is installed such that it cannot be completely closed off and dead head the pump.
