I recently bought a used Hayward Power-Flo Matrix 1HP pump & Hayward 180T filter. I got everything for $60 because the guy selling them couldn't get the pump to turn on. After getting it home, I started researching the pump to see if I could get working. I did find that the switch was bad. So I replaced it with a similar switch that I had on hand. Then came the researching why it would just hum when turning it on. I tried jump starting it with a screwdriver, but found that the drill worked much better. I've taken it apart and cleaned what little corrosion there was in it. Cleaned the contacts on the centrifugal starter. It still won't start on its on own. Well, yesterday I jump started it while hooked up to pool so I could let it run for several hours in hopes that it might "fix" itself and start on its own the next time I shut it off. Well, sometime in within 2 hours of getting it started it overheated and shut off. Does anybody have any suggestions to getting this thing working properly, or do I just need to give up on the Hayward pump.

The only thing saving me right now is an old 1HP spa pump I had laying around. Of course I had to free the frozen armature first, but it fired right up after that.

And BTW, after searching all these issues, I found that most of links that I got answers from brought back here to TFP!

So I had a brainstorm over the weekend. Instead of trying to fix the Hayward motor, why not swap the Hayward wet end onto the motor from the spa pump. After swapping things over, I hooked it up and it wouldn't start. I got frustrated and gave up. Then today, I figured I could I could take it apart and test the motor between each stage of assembly and pin point where my problem. Short version of the story, I didn't have the impeller tight enough and it was hung up against the infuser.
