I recently bought a used Hayward Power-Flo Matrix 1HP pump & Hayward 180T filter. I got everything for $60 because the guy selling them couldn't get the pump to turn on. After getting it home, I started researching the pump to see if I could get working. I did find that the switch was bad. So I replaced it with a similar switch that I had on hand. Then came the researching why it would just hum when turning it on. I tried jump starting it with a screwdriver, but found that the drill worked much better. I've taken it apart and cleaned what little corrosion there was in it. Cleaned the contacts on the centrifugal starter. It still won't start on its on own. Well, yesterday I jump started it while hooked up to pool so I could let it run for several hours in hopes that it might "fix" itself and start on its own the next time I shut it off. Well, sometime in within 2 hours of getting it started it overheated and shut off. Does anybody have any suggestions to getting this thing working properly, or do I just need to give up on the Hayward pump.

The only thing saving me right now is an old 1HP spa pump I had laying around. Of course I had to free the frozen armature first, but it fired right up after that.
And BTW, after searching all these issues, I found that most of links that I got answers from brought back here to TFP!
