Hayward h series pool heater

I have a Hayward h series pool heater. It’s less then 2 yrs old but out of warranty. I noticed last week that water was leaking out of it and after looking up some internet stuff realized it was the heat exchanger. After battling with useless pool maintenance company. I ordered a new one and installed it myself. After changing it out i was looking for where it was leaking and found the brass at the front of it where the heat exchanger was conected to the plastic fittings completely rotted away. Could this be from one season of chemicals, or does this look like a factory defect

Most heat exchanger failures are due to running very low pH water through them.
We have some good heater experts that will give you their opinion.
I suggest you read ABC's of Pool Water Chemistry and consider reviewing the entire Pool School eBook.

Worn heat exchanger could be from poor water chemistry or it could be from too high a water flow rate. See page 25 where it says

If the normal pump and filter system flow rate exceeds
125 gpm then a manual bypass valve must be installed as
shown in Figure 12. Damage caused by flow rates outside
this range will void the manufacturer’s warranty.

High water flow will erode the heat exchanger.

Without knowing your water chemistry over the last 2 years and your pool equipment we can't pin down more of a cause.

How do I figure out my flow rate

@mas985 may be able to help but we need to know details about your pump, filter, valves, water features, etc.

Again, details of your our pool in your signature would help us help you.

Pool water is generally not very abrasive especially after the filter plus it would takes years if not decades to erode that much copper.

However, corrosion can be much faster but still, within two years seems much too short. Unless of course the PH has been extremely low for that period of time. But it would probably have to be so low that the water would not be safe to swim in.

You might send some pictures to Hayward to see what they say. But I suspect they will blame your chemistry.
