Having trouble with my autofill valve

I have an inground pool with an auto fill valve. When I bought the house I noticed that the cover for the auto fill valve was not sitting in the hole correctly and noticed the valve was not working. Not a big deal to replace, its a simple toilet fill valve, I believe it is referred to a center mount install. I replaced the valve and now figured out why the cover was not sitting on the housing correctly, to get the water level high enough in the pool (almost 1/2 way on the skimmer opening) I need to have the valve set to its highest position possible and then the cover will not sit in the housing it is about 3/4 to 1" above it because its sitting on top of the fill valve.

Any ideas? I can not find a different fill valve that would solve this issue. I'm thinking maybe I need to put some weight on the float to hold it down and lower it over all to get something that works.

That looks similar to my A&A Quik Water Leveler.
Initially mine had a Korky valve. It's been replaced with a Fluidmaster, similar to your valve.

I adjusted the height of the valve to fix within the height constraints of the autofill canister. Then adjusted the float level using the float screw so the autofill shuts off at the level I need.

It may take a bit of playing around with it, but it should work.
Just be really careful of over tightening the fill valve as you can crack the receiver fitting in the bottom of the autofill.

Is there any indication of manufacturer on the underside of the lid?

The one I installed is a Kohler, It has a coarse and fine adjustment, and I can adjust it and it does work. The problem is when I set it up to work the get the water level where I need it, the Top of the valve is so high up in the can that I can't put the lid on. So I need it an inch lower but keep the water on so I need a heaver float.

I'm not familiar with the Kohler valve.
I don't think it's much different than the Fluidmaster valve.

Maybe go buy a Fluidmaster 400a for less than $10 at HD/Lowes and see if it's any different from the Kohler valve.
Install so that the overall valve height is low enough to clear the cover and then adjust the float height with the plastic screw (black screw, upper left in your pic).
If that doesn't work, maybe try the Korky offering.

Better yet - pick up both the Fluidmaster and the Korky and save yourself a trip - if neither work, return them next time you need something there.

I had a similar issue and as others have stated, I set the valve so the lid would close and then adjusted the small black thumb screw to get it right. It took several tries, but it worked!

I have the FluidMaster 400a.
