H400idl2 not firing up

Hi guys,

I was hoping so gleam some heater knowledge from the experts here.

I have a Haayward H400idl2 and the blower does not turn on. It gives me an AO error code. I believe this is a blower code, but what are the first steps I should take?

Thanks in advance!

You don't need to power the unit on at all in order to see if the motor spins freely. All you are trying to find out is if the motor is seized up or not.

Hello.

I am new to this forum and see that this thread and noticed that this is the same heater, so here i go. I have the Hayward H400 heater and I just can't get it to kick on....i installed a new board when a couple of resistor burned up and new pressure switch. When i start it up the fan kicks on, pilot light is nice and red, glowing through the window and then it clicks and the pilot light just goes out, then it tries again...always with the same result of no burn. i did have a technician come out but i honestly didn't trust that he did the right things...he said the natural gas valve needs to be replaced....i took off the valve, and performed a bench test....brought it into work and applied 24 volts to it and i could hear the valve opening and closing just fine....actually took the valve all apart and cleaned it and double check (not much to it). I recall i checked the voltage across the Two terminals Th and T?(can't remember) and it measured low...(.002 I think) so i brought in the AC to DC converter and hooked it up to 110 and it puts out 13v so it is good (240-24v). I will check the actual input into the AC to DC converter to ensure it is receiving the necessary 240v input as needed to generate the 24 volts as well. Just curious is i'm missing anything?? I appreciate your help. Dan

Is your heater a H400IDL2?

Ok first thing I noticed were both tubes were cracked and one was not connected. I cut and reconnected the tubing and when I suck on the right one I hear it click but nothing on the left. I believe that's the vent pressure switch, should it also be easily clicking when pressure is exerted through it?

The fan on the blower also spins nice and free.

Ok, so I scheduled an appointment with a Leslies pool tech to come out today since they are right behind my house and here's what followed. Bare in mind, not one word is exaggerated.

He knocks on the door and I introduce myself and show him around to the back where the equipment is. I prefaced that I just started taking a look at the heater and explained what I did thus far. I told him I am getting an AO code, indicating the blower and I pulled the top and had 2 heat cracked hoses and the blower vacuum hose wasnt even connected. After trimming them, I reconnected them and I could suck on the tube to temporarily make the AO code go away. I told him I hadn't checked the resistance on the wires yet and although the blower spins freely by hand, the blower doesn't kick on either way. I did check the power and all the hot wires are providing power.

Joe asked that I turn the system on so I clicked it on. He kneeled down and pressed the system button to cycle through standby/spa/pool and then took a look at my PSI reading. He said that's your problem right there, you need to clean your filters. In my head, I was thinking this couldnt possibly be the cause, but he's the expert so I actually asked him flat out and he said again, I 100% guarantee that's the problem. He said, I just saved you $100 bucks and you will be swimming in there tonight. He said, pop the cartridge top off and pull the filters to let the water flow through and the heater will kick right on because it's a safety feature.

I told him if that was true than that is the best news I've heard all day and told him it would take me 5 minutes to pop the top and pull the filters. He said, sorry guy but I don't have time to hang out, but again that's the issue. His exact words were, "your up and down buttons work so everything is working fine." He then packed up, shook my hand and split. No joke this was less than 8 minutes total.

So as expected, I pulled everything and within 45 minutes with my power washer, I had those filters bright white again. I popped them in and with the spa return and suction closed, the PSI reading is at maybe 3. I then close the pool suction and the PSI is about the same, then when I close the pool return over to SPA the PSI goes to about 18. I don't know if that's normal or not, but either way I thought I'd share the events of the last 90 minutes.

End result is the AO code persists to both SPA and POOL. Did this Leslies tech have a hidden camera and was just messing with me??

Couple more questions. Would it even help if I swapped out the blower vacuum switch, as the blower isn't kicking on even when suctioning on the tube which takes care of the AO error?

The system igniter will click but the blower never turns on with or without the error code.

I can measure the wire readings in a bit as well to confirm they are in acceptable ranges.

WOW on the Leslie pool tech. He could have pulled the cartridge out and tested in less than 5 minutes. You can run the system without a filter in for a while. You could even jump the pressure switch inside the heater to see if it comes on.

Find a replacement switch and see what that does.

First in order for the system to work correctly, there is a switch that the front panel pushes in so you have to make sure that is pushed in or the system will not try to fire. If the fan does not spin it will not activate the air switch.

Ok my front panel doesn't have any switches anywhere showing the panel is open. Just the 2 screws on the bezel panel and the 2 screws that hold the lower panel on.

Sorry about that, it is located behind the control panel. So if the control panel is open, the switch is not pushed in thus not allowing the heater to properly operate.

Here is a link to the manual that might help as well.
