Green pool

So I decided to break free from the chains of the pool stores to try to maintain this myself. However, my test kit (K-2006) doesn't arrive till Friday. I have a reading from the pool place stating my CYA was 2. In my opinion that is pretty much just 0. I have a number of questions I figured you guys could help with.

  • Should I take their word for it and start by adding the required stabilizer based on their reading (and take their word on the FC and CC as well?
  • In further note should I take their reading for any of the other
  • I know I need to SLAM (it was green) but should I even worry about the pH, TA, and CH (not really worried about this as I have a vinyl liner) while slamming?
  • They said my water had to much metal in it and gave me this long list of things I can do to remove the metal out of it. I noticed that the K-2006 (I didnt get the C because it looked like the 2006C just had more quantity of the tests) didnt have a metal test in it. Is this something I need to worry about? My steps when the pool was clean last year were not stained or anything like that.
  • They also said I need to replace my sand in my sand filter which I know you guys have said is not needed but I listened to them before discovering this place and did 2 doses of REVIVE. I am afraid it is super clogged and my sand filter has some crazy plumbing that won't allow you to remove it without cutting pipes and I have no desire to be a plumber in the Arkansas heat (medical condition won't allow me to either).

Really looking forward to taking control of my pool myself. I appreciate any advise you guys can give and look forward to learning a lot.

Hey Jeff, and welcome to TFP! REVIVE appears to be a phosphate/metal control product, so I would hope it didn't mess-up your sand too much. Whether there were any other products added in the past who knows, but for now I suspect you are okay. As for your questions:

- Don't place much trust in the pool store tests. No sense guessing either. Friday will be here soon enough for a full set of your own "accurate" tests.
- As noted on the SLAM Process page, the pH needs to be lowered to about 7.2 before starting the SLAM. Then we'll confirm the CYA and increase the FC to the proper SLAM/shock level for that CYA as noted on the [FC/CYA][/FC/CYA]. That's the chemical portion. The SLAA page has all the other details.
- Metals huh? I suspect iron? Are you on a well? Regardless, if you have algae, you have to treat the algae first, then come back to treating for metals. We can help you with that later.
- Sand almost never goes bad unless something was added to it like floc for example. For now, I think you're okay. But at some point you do need to be prepared to perform a "Deep Clean" of the filter. If your multiport valve plumbing was screwed-in then glued-in without any unions to remove it, yes, it will require some PVC cutting and reinstalling afterwards. We can help you with that later as well when it's time to do it.

For now, please update your signature with all of your pool and equipment info. Go ahead and include the test kit as well. We'll watch for you first set of test results Friday. Nice to have you with us.

Awesome thanks for the quick reply. I'll just hold off until I get the tests but I bet I'm going to have to raise the pH to get it between the required 7.2 and 7.5 as the store had it at 6.6 but we'll see what the tests actually say. Signature should be updated now. I also bookmarked all the links in your signature. Oh ya and I have the pool math app...I like it.

CYA - 0 wouldn't even get cloudy
TA - 40
Ph- 6.8 was not even 7
Fc - 1
Cc- 2
CH - 490

Do I need to worry about ch right now or just get the ph and CYA right and start the slam? Pool was super green and I put tons of hth shock in it and vacuumed and leaf raked out a ton of stuff. Appreciate any advise you guys can give.

don't worry about CH, 490 is not crazy anyway. When pool is clear you can worry about CH, but on vinyl it's not as big of an issue.

Add chlorine and start slamming. Your pH should rise with the amount of dead organics after chlorine does it's magic.

Yeah, get the sock going (CYA) and increase FC to 12. The pH will rise with the elevated FC anyways, and once the SLAM is done you can adjust the pH if needed.
Adding CYA:
To increase CYA via granular stabilizer, place the required amount as calculated by the Poolmath calculator into a white sock and place in the poolside skimmer basket. For those concerned about suction flow to the pump, suspending the sock near a return jet or from a floating device will also suffice. Best never to allow undissolved granules to rest directly against the pool surface. Squeeze the sock periodically to help it dissipate. Once dissolved, consider your CYA adjusted to that programmed (target) level. CYA test readings should show a rise in 24-48 hours, however some pools may experience a longer delay to fully register. Best to confirm final CYA in about 5-7 days before adding any more stabilizer/conditioner.

So I did a nylon hose infront of the return in the deep end it finished dissolving this morning. Also on Saturday, I put enough Borax to raise the pH and tested it on Sunday and got right at 7.2. I started slamming to get to 12 FC yesterday(Sunday). I think I tested 5 times yesterday and was still loosing a lot of chlorine but not to aweful (1 to 2 every 2 hours or so). I went ahead and tested CYA, FC, and CC this morning.

CYA - it was super cloudy at the top but I could still see the black dot in even non direct light. I am calling it at 22. Not sure if that is right or not. I went ahead and added more dry stabilizer (1.1in a nylon in front of the return.
FC - 6.6 (tested at 9'ish last and added enough to get it to 12...I'll test later tonight).
CC - 1.2 - so this is going down.

I think I'm on the right track. The water seemed a little clearer. Not sure if I should just keep testing the CYA or assume it gets to 30? Maybe I jumped the gun on adding it today?? I could pull the nylon out if needed.

If you added the proper amount of stabilizer, the CYA should make it to 30 by tomorrow. Give it another day or two and re-test as follows:
CYA Testing:
Proper lighting is critical for the CYA test, so you want to test for CYA outside on a bright sunny day. Use the mixing bottle to gently mix the required amounts of pool water and R-0013 reagent, let sit for 30 seconds, then gently mix again. Recommend standing outside with your back to the sun and the view tube in the shade of your body at waist level. Then, begin squirting the mixed solution into the skinny tube. Watch the black dot until it completely disappears. Once it disappears, record the CYA reading. To help the eyes and prevent staring at the dot, some people find it better to pour & view in stages. Pour some solution into the viewing tube, look away, then look back again for the dot. Repeat as necessary until you feel the dot is gone. After the first CYA test, you can pour the mixed solution from the skinny view tube back to the mixing bottle, gently shake, and do the same test a second, third, or fourth time to instill consistency in your technique, become more comfortable with the testing, and validate your own CYA reading.

From there, keep doing what you're doing and maintain the FC as best as you can - work & life permitting. :) Follow the SLAM Process page until you pass all 3 SLAM criteria. Have a good day.

How much CYA have you added? If you dissolved the powder in the pool it is in there. So if the first add was for 30 ppm, and the second add was for an additional 10 ppm (guessing here as you have not said how much you have added) then your CYA is 40. Use the SLAM level for that.

Test the CYA 24 hours after ALL the powder is dissolved as long as the pump has been running for 24 hours.

Take care.

How much TOTAL stabilizer have you added since starting this whole process? Convert that to ppm CYA using PoolMath. That is the CYA you will use for your SLAM level.

Is it just me or do you use a ton of the R-0871 reagent compared to the others at least while slamming? I've got some replacements ordered I just hope what I have lasts through Wednesday when the extra arrives. I guess I can test less often but I was hoping that the more often I tested and kept FC at SLAM level the quicker the pool would clear up.

Not seeing a ton of improvement so far but here's to hoping for the best. I'm just gonna keep the FC around 16, brush each day, and vaccuum every now and then. I'll see about posting a pic soon.

So I didnt quite post all the details. I put a ton of Burnout 73 before I found this place and it got it pretty much to the color you see below from a dark nasty green. I'm not sure if that changes things or not.

You are only about 3 days into the SLAM. You are now in POP time, Pool Owner Patience. It takes time.

You will use alot of the R0871. That is why we suggest the XL option with the TF100 kit.

The K2006 kit you purchased has minimal reagent for the tests you do most often. As you have found out.

Order a refill for the FAS-DPD now. If you test less and not maintain your FC at SLAM, it will take longer.

Good luck.
