+1. The age of the filters is mostly irrelevant if you are gumming them up with gunk. On the contrary, they're working GREAT, but you risk ruining them if the sediment goes through the filter.

Absolutely not. You sought 'professional help' and either they didn't live up to the moniker, or they had their own financial motives steering you wrong. Or somewhere in the middle. You did the best with the bad advice you were given and it's not on you. I know this because we've played this story out more times than I can count, my own story being one of them. I soaked my SWG cell in straight Muriatic acid, as told by the professionals, for what amounted to 6.5 hours of soaking over its lifespan. No kidding it died early. But what did I know ?

I always second guessed the pros but I was at a standstill with my pool and was desperate bc I want to sell my house, high copper issue really throw me. My water kept getting greener with algaecide and shock. In the end, they all pretty much said the copper needed to be addressed and I was concerned with staining. I followed that until I came here and was encouraged to slam. I am glad I didnt let anyone convince me to let them drain my pool fully.+1. Why are you asking about that when you have a cartridge filter?
Please stop looking for magic solutions to fix your problem. Pool companies trade on magic solution’s to lighten your wallet. If they worked we would suggest them.

I never knew this with my prior pool decades ago and gave up pools because of it, eventually, but there is nothing, and I mean nothing, you can throw in a pool to fix an algae outbreak. All I knew to do what change out the water and start over.
There's "no" supershock, algaecide, magic potion, etc.... that you can throw in and fix. Algae is like an infection. You can't take one dose of double antibiotics and be cured. Likewise, you can't shock your pool and cure algae. It takes days of keeping up the level of antibiotics in your system to even begin to kill of what's infecting you. Same for pool. SLAM is that process of days of slam/shock level chlorine until "ALL" the signs of any living algae are gone.
Hard to believe 107 posts in to this thread and no further along than #1. The unwillingness to get the recommended test kits will be the undoing of your pool.

This thread has about run it's useful life. lilyjo, there is really nothing else we can add to help you unless you get ONE OF THE KITS WE SUGGEST AND THEN SLAM the pool. Post back with a complete set of test results and we'll help you. Progress is impossible until then.
Actually I did a taylor test and my cya is low along with the chlorine.
Yes, first some stabilizer but she is improving. Thank you so much for your concern and advice.

now that I have a pool service that includes chemicals, I am reluctant to purchase any. I do have some baking soda on hand about 2 pounds think that will help with the cya as well as alk?
If you're not going to follow the process as recommended, then there is nothing we can do to help you.

Just let us know if you understand what TFP guidelines are or are you just playing with us? We are trying to help you but you seam reluctant to follow our advice, then why come here, ask question and not following advice.
I was asked the test results from Taylor test kit and posted them, this is during my slam process that was recommended. I am doing exactly what was adviced.
Something is very wrong. You cannot perform a SLAM process using a pool service and having a free chlorine level of zero. That’s why everyone is confused about what’s going on.
