Glass Filter Media

Hello,
I am replacing the laterals in my Tagelus 100 filter this spring. I am contemplating possibly switching over to glass media (Maytronics Activate). Can anyone here share their experience or expertise with glass media? Does it work? Is it worth it? Thank you in advance.

The general consensus we see on the forum is that sand is the best media to use. The alternatives may or may not work, some like them, some get rid of them, etc. Sand is cheap, readily available, and never wears out. It should never need changing in a pool lifetime if pool store potions are not circulated through it.

The bulk of water clarity is chemistry based. Are you having issues with your water quality?

If not then why are you contemplating changing something that is working fine? If so, then you probably want to look in to your levels as something is likely wrong.

Thank you. I am leaning toward staying with sand. I’ve read up quite a bit on the glass media and though most seem happy with it, there still doesn’t seem to be many people who have made the switch

No issues with water quality at all. My pool was absolutely perfect all season last year. I’ve noticed more and more sand accumulating on the steps below the return and decided to replace my filter laterals. Since all of the sand will be removed from the filter, I figure why not put new stuff back in? I was just curious about everyone’s thoughts on glass media

I'm frugal.... I like sand with a little top dressing of DE powder when I really want my water to sparkle!

Why bother with anything else I've got to wonder!? You dont even have to buy new sand. Just replenish the existing sand to make sure you have the correct amount. If your old sand is dirty, you can wash it inside a wheelbarrow before putting it back in.

I just switched to BrightLine filter glass, when I replaced my liner, I debated some time switching over from sand. What pushed me over, was glasses purported ability to filter metals from the water. My well is high in iron, and is an ongoing battle, wish I had found TFP sooner, would have saved a bundle on buying chemicals I didn't need. However it has performed as advertised, in regards to filtering out iron in my pool, I wish I had filmed the first backwash, the rust brown sludge, blew my mind. I've backwashed 4 times this month, not due to a weekly schedule, but hitting my 25% filter pressure. Pool's crystal clear, I'm using a metal filter to top off, and have switched over to Jack's Magic The Pink Stuff, a sequestrant, and using their test kit monitor/maintain appropriate levels. I'm glad to have switched media, but now I'm confused about using it, some sites say swap pound for pound, BrightLine says use 20% less (I used 180# in a 200# sand filter, per their instructions). What about maintenance? Does it require cleaning, like sand? Does it really filter down to 5 microns? Will it last 3 times longer than sand? I don't know...
