AFCI’s should only be used in instances where arcing in a confined space could happen. This is why electrical code in many jurisdictions now requires that they be installed on all bedroom circuits. AFCI’s should not be used on circuits with high inductive loads like refrigerators (which should have their own dedicated circuit anyway). Wet spaces should have GFCI’s. If local code doesn’t require either, then don’t use them. You are not doing yourself any favors if you do.
