Geodesic Dome Over Pool

Is this a stupid idea? We are already in the process of building a round inground pool. We have been thinking of enclosing it for a bunch of reasons. It is secure and can be locked, its private, it keeps the wind out, it stays cleaner, the kids dont have to wear sunscreen etc....

So we have talked with a handful of manufacturers of geodesic domes and the plan would be do have a dome made with 2" x 1/8" 6061 aluminum piping, with a canvas cover that has a large glass sunroof and large glass window and a double door that opens 8' wide. In my mind this seems like the perfect solution, but nobody else seems to have done it and I can't help but think there is a reason why that I am missing. Hoping you guys can point out something I might be missing.

Ventilation is a key concern to any covered pool to control temperature and humidity. Do you have something in mind for that?

People in Florida do it all the time - it’s called a screened-in patio. Some go super fancy and have “hard” wall panels and glass top roofing while others go a little cheaper and use soft siding with screens and clear plastic panels for daylight. They are usually bolted into the frame of the house and secured with concrete footings. It is important for any structure like that to have the proper wind rating and up-draft ratings so that the structure doesn’t go airborne potentially causing damage or injury to the surrounding structures or people.

Whatever you do, make sure any plan is reviewed and stamped by a licensed structural engineer that knows the local conditions of your environment. Not doing that leaves you entirely open to any and all liability. Also check with your homeowners insurance to make sure they will cover a separate structure like that.

I thought the same thing. We have a 24 foot round above ground pool and wonder why someone hasn’t made a simple dome that’s cost reasonable for all year , I thought having a bottom brace for adhering it to the pool ledges. Geodesic would be wind resist, and UV poly carbonate plastic for the dome cover. A side note ; we love deep water swimming , couldn’t afford an inground pool.had three boys and four grands. We got a digger and left a foot ledge around the pool walls with cement pavers to hold the walls up and bowl dug the middle of the pool to a six foot water depth. The liner stretched perfectly to accommodate this plus, it taught all the younger kids how to swim better. When hot days roll around they want to come to our pool. I also painted the outside pool walls almost black, and this ensured our pool water is mostly around 80 degrees or better for us older folk.
